I’m a designer, which is a well-known profession, but I design substations, which almost no one I’ve run into has heard of.
Substations are like giant jungle-gyms for electricity. They’re a grouping of electric structures that transfer high-voltage electricity to low-voltage, or low voltage to high voltage. They’re a major part of our electricity distribution system. You drive by at least one every day, most likely.
I got into it by chance. Right place, right time. I went back to school and got my AS in drafting for industrial design and manufacturing. I applied to this job on accident, thinking it was for manufacturing, then when I was offered an interview, accepted it despite the mixup. Why not? They offered about double what other jobs were for a drafter, so I took it.
8 months into the job, a designer position opened up, so I interviewed for that and got the promption!
Door is still wide open, despite the general idea that drafters are becoming less of a demand. Based on my experience, they’re sorely needed, especially for civil jobs. Also I get paid higher than a friend of mine who got her masters in interior architecture (also a drafting/design gig), with just my AS. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Totally worth it.
My problem with scifi and movies is that most of them are scary/horror. Not so much the case recently, but I remember walking the scifi section being mashed in with the horror section.
I’m one of those who can’t. Temptation to nap is too strong. Also I have that procrastination issue where I’d rather be cleaning the floor with a toothbrush than do work, so it’s hard not to do housechores when I hit a wall in my day.
On top of that, I need more face-to-face socialization. I just do. I need to go somewhere that’s not my house every day or I spiral and it’s not pretty.
It would probably work better as a comedy series, but I’d love to read or watch a story about a group of three conspiracy-believing idiots who manage to sneak aboard a scientific ship headed to antartica to try and prove that the earth is flat. However, disaster strikes and the ship sinks just off the coast, only for the three idiots and one scientist to survive. They have to band together to survive the aric, and end up losing their way… and discover that the world is actually flat when they run into a giant wall of ice that extends farther up than anything could exsist and just never ends.
The main character is actually the scientist who is grappling with the idea that these three idiots he has to deal with are actually right, and he’s fallen for the round earth propaganda. Maybe they run into the actual scientists who help maintain the lie that the earth is flat. I dunno.
What’s gross about it? It’s just skin. You have it too. Are you grossed out by your own skin? Why is face and arm and hand skin not gross, but belly and chest skin is? Is wearing shorts gross because you see leg skin?
