OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What is your favorite hobby?

Writing fiction.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What are Lemmy's unwritten rules?

It’s just as bad as reddit, just way less people in general.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What are Lemmy's unwritten rules?

Don’t you dare consider the nuance of any topic, political or otherwise.

OceanSoap, to memes in Being taken to a loving home

I’m waiting in the longest line right now and this made me laugh. Thanks.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

Not voting Democrat this time around.

Not sure yet who I’m voting for, though.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

Haley is literally a war monger. She stated she wanted us to get into 3 active wars, with China, Russia and Iran.

You would vote for the candidate who is most likely to start WW3???

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

I’m a designer, which is a well-known profession, but I design substations, which almost no one I’ve run into has heard of.

Substations are like giant jungle-gyms for electricity. They’re a grouping of electric structures that transfer high-voltage electricity to low-voltage, or low voltage to high voltage. They’re a major part of our electricity distribution system. You drive by at least one every day, most likely.

I got into it by chance. Right place, right time. I went back to school and got my AS in drafting for industrial design and manufacturing. I applied to this job on accident, thinking it was for manufacturing, then when I was offered an interview, accepted it despite the mixup. Why not? They offered about double what other jobs were for a drafter, so I took it.

8 months into the job, a designer position opened up, so I interviewed for that and got the promption!

Door is still wide open, despite the general idea that drafters are becoming less of a demand. Based on my experience, they’re sorely needed, especially for civil jobs. Also I get paid higher than a friend of mine who got her masters in interior architecture (also a drafting/design gig), with just my AS. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Totally worth it.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What's a sci-fi or fantasy book or series that you want to see adapted as a movie/television series?

My problem with scifi and movies is that most of them are scary/horror. Not so much the case recently, but I remember walking the scifi section being mashed in with the horror section.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What skill did you learn during lockdown that is still helpful to you now?

I’m one of those who can’t. Temptation to nap is too strong. Also I have that procrastination issue where I’d rather be cleaning the floor with a toothbrush than do work, so it’s hard not to do housechores when I hit a wall in my day.

On top of that, I need more face-to-face socialization. I just do. I need to go somewhere that’s not my house every day or I spiral and it’s not pretty.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What's an idea you have for a story that you think is really good, but don't have the skill or time to flesh out?

It would probably work better as a comedy series, but I’d love to read or watch a story about a group of three conspiracy-believing idiots who manage to sneak aboard a scientific ship headed to antartica to try and prove that the earth is flat. However, disaster strikes and the ship sinks just off the coast, only for the three idiots and one scientist to survive. They have to band together to survive the aric, and end up losing their way… and discover that the world is actually flat when they run into a giant wall of ice that extends farther up than anything could exsist and just never ends.

The main character is actually the scientist who is grappling with the idea that these three idiots he has to deal with are actually right, and he’s fallen for the round earth propaganda. Maybe they run into the actual scientists who help maintain the lie that the earth is flat. I dunno.

But I like the idea of it.

Hmm, have you read Clan of the Cavebear? It’s an older series, but set in the timeline you discuss here. You should check it out, it’s a good read.

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in What is a product that you won’t accept a generic alternative for?

Yes, once I tried kerrygold, I never went back.

OceanSoap, to worldnews in 'Virtually certain' that 2023 will be warmest year after October record

Yes, we are in a warming period.

OceanSoap, to unpopularopinion in men not having shirts on in public is gross

What’s gross about it? It’s just skin. You have it too. Are you grossed out by your own skin? Why is face and arm and hand skin not gross, but belly and chest skin is? Is wearing shorts gross because you see leg skin?

OceanSoap, to asklemmy in Which Life Pro Tip disappointed you?

Would you mind sharing pictures? I’ve been getting massages because of my back and neck issues from side sleeping
