*The world 3 months ago:*AI is growing exponentially and might take over the world soon. It can do everything you can, but better, and some even seem almost centient.

*The world today:*Turns out the large language model made to fool us tried to fool us by ‘unexpectedly’ exhibiting behavior it was made for.

I'm poking around at it now. I'm guessing it's probably something to do with JavaScript -- which I block by default via NoScript. (That's kind of odd though since I thought it was generating a <details>/<summary> HTML block server side, but maybe it's doing it on the client and I just happened to have JS unblocked when I saw it before?)

Edit: It looks like it is coming from this webpack'd JS file currently which I think is built from this JS source file; there is a handleSpoilers function defined which manipulates details/summary elements. Oddly, there is also PHP code for manipulating details/summary like I thought.

@ernest can chime in on if that's a temporary thing or what, but yeah, it seems to not work for me because I block JavaScript.

I still use Reddit a bit (on desktop only), mostly to check on some niche communities that aren't really on the Fediverse yet, but Kbin has been very nice also. It's nice and chill, and overall a lot less fascist/bigot friendly, which is refreshing.

Nice Kingdom Come Deliverance profile pic btw

On the whole, Kbin and the wider fediverse have been great! I feel that I've been able to engage a lot more meaningfully with others here, though that's likely due to it being relatively small. Likewise, I've been posting a lot more to help this place grow, which has been great.

The whole decentralization aspect is particularly great. From Kbin, I can view threads from other Lemmy & Kbin instances as well as microblogs from Mastodon instances, and it's great to be able to view all of those in one place with Kbin's UI.

All of that being said, there are definitely some growing pains, primarily related to activity. Outside of general communities on big Lemmy instances, people don't post much. This is the case with any social media site — way more people are willing to view or even engage with content than to post it — but I can't help but wish that some of the people voting and commenting on posts would also make some of their own and contribute to magazines. Often, this is due to people just not having ideas for what to post (speaking from experience), but I think a lot of it is people just not thinking to post that cool thing they saw somewhere else or on another magazine.

There are also a lot features that have yet to be implemented on Kbin. Microblog federation is very poor, there isn't a built-in subscriptions panel, the image UI in post creation provides no visual feedback, you can't follow tags as useful as it would be, moderation is still limited unless you're the owner and have access to the magazine panel, etc. Of course, Ernest et al. can only work so quickly, and the progress that has been made so far is great — for example, the crossposting UI is awesome and has helped me discover more magazines — but the lack of features does still impact the experience regardless of what can be done about it.

Kbin is great, and I'm hoping that development continues at the current pace. Above all, I'm hoping that a few more people here decide to post a bit more regularly or at all.

There are mobile apps in development and the API is coming along.
Kbin is still just a prototype though, but it's moving along nicely.

My other feeling is that kbin is setting up to be like iCloud whereas lemmy is more akin to sftp.

I've no idea what that analogy even is, but I think the differences are mostly technical (PHP vs Rust) and UX.
Both implement AP a bit differently, but at the end of the day, they're still AP aggregators.
And that's ignoring the political issues around lemmy's codebase ofc.

mateomaui,

My iOS solution is uninstalling YouTube so the links will open in a default browser instead, setting the default to Firefox Focus, and installing PocketTube, where you have to be logged into YT so it downloads your subscriptions and latest videos. Use it to organize your subscriptions into group playlists, then hit a button in the corner while viewing a list for it to forward the list to FF Focus. The only gripe I have about it is that every time a new video from the playlist loads, you have to toggle fullscreen on again because it’s effectively opening a new page in FF Focus. You can also watch videos directly in PocketTube by tapping an individual video, and also seems to skip ads, but you don’t have subtitles that way.

Afaik this works by itself, but I also have the $1.99 Vinegar extension for Safari installed which may or not contribute to the ad blocking. I’d try it without first to see what happens.

edit: This is also my solution on Android, except I have PocketTube open the list in YT Revanced, where optionally I can cast the list to SmartTube on my FireTV including SponsorBlocks. The only place I’m logged in is PocketTube.
