Instead of a “renaissance man”, I’m a “renaissance nerd”. Pinball? Sure. Sci-fi? Of course. video games? Natch. 70’s Italian Prog-rock? A raison d’etre.

Mbourgon,

Man, there are a ton of excellent photos in that article. Thanks!

An Additional Owl of the Year Prize (lemmy.world)

I looked into sponsoring a White Faced Scops Owl for us, but they were all in the UK or Africa and were all parts of packages that came with physical items and perks, so that all sounded a bit involved. Even if I did that though, I know there’s going to be owls I’ll never be able to find to adopt. I know this, because I...

Mbourgon,

Dude, thanks again for doing all of this! This has definitely been a highlight of my feed the past couple of weeks

Mbourgon,

Can we do a loser’s elimination bracket? So many superb owls.

Mbourgon,

Appreciate all the hard work, dude. For me it’s been fantastic seeing all these photos. It’s a very big bracket, so you could probably simplify that. I loved the mix of owls I’ve never seen and the “standards”

Mbourgon,

@anon6789 you should post these as posts and not just replies!

Mbourgon,

Trump, if that wasn’t a WHOOSH

Mbourgon,

Also sounded like they had apps centered/only there that had to be online for everything else to work.

But the 4-minutes-instead-of-10 batteries certainly didn’t help.

Mbourgon,

Thinking through with Shortcuts, I wonder if you could create a dictionary that has the highest track number for each album, and then iterate through again and see how many songs you have for each album, and see if they match

Mbourgon,

RIP chocolate almond-covered ice cream bar. You are still missed.

Mbourgon,

Apple not doing themselves any favors here - it’s been over a year since they were notified.

Mbourgon,

Heck, let’s break this up!

Best Novel

  • Nettle & Bone, by T. Kingfisher (Tor Books)
  • The Daughter of Doctor Moreau, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (Del Rey)
  • The Kaiju Preservation Society, by John Scalzi (Tor Books)
  • Legends & Lattes, by Travis Baldree (Tor Books)
  • Nona the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir (Tordotcom)
  • The Spare Man, by Mary Robinette Kowal (Tor Books)

I’ve only read two of these and bounced hard on the post-Gideon “Ninth” books. (Gideon was absolutely astonishingly good, but Harrow just never clicked - so I guess I need to try Nona) Glad I have several more books to go read!

Legends and Lattes - the podcast “Stories from Among the Stars” just serialized the audiobook. It was quite enjoyable. I think the term is “cottage core”. Low stakes, just a cozy, enjoyable low fantasy story with some entertaining bits, some fun characters, and coffee.

The Spare Man - someone said “The Thin Man movies, but in space”, and I had bought and was reading it 2 minutes later. Not deep, but a really solid murder mystery, IN SPAAAAAACE. Definitely The Thin Man (movies!!) with a lovely couple and their dog. It reminded me a bit of John Varley’s “The Golden Globe”, as the character’s backstory grows over the course of the novel, it was quippy and FUN. Lots of suspects, Kowal is really good with the page - I’ve read 1 or 2 other books of hers, but this book I’d buy 15 more of.

Mbourgon,

You bet! It’s too damn quiet here, and while I was on That Other Site, there were so many song posts I spent the last week of the month listening to it all, deciding what to buy. Last month was even better, truth be told:

  • Myth Of I: Blood (djent/math)
  • Peachy: Los Tropicos (math)
  • Night Verses: Every Sound has a Color (djent/math)
  • The Chronicles of father Robin:Songs & Tales of Airoea (retro prog somewhat like wobbler)
  • Pomegranate Tiger: All Input is Error (djent/prog metal)
  • Agusa: Prima Material (folky prog)

But now I’m on the hunt for new stuff.

Mbourgon,

Yeah, “theoretically rideable” vs “I would ride this” is huge. On a real road there’s a certain amount of maintenance and cleaning. Shoulders? Not so much.

Mbourgon,

It can run on a Raspberry Pi 2. It’s not going to transcode, mind you, but works great - though I’d recommend a real drive, I was using one and it wore out its boot card.

Mbourgon,

Looking at this: skyandtelescope.org/…/lucky-imaging/

Reading between the lines, my bet is that it is looking for photos with less atmospheric blurring. Since it sets reference points, it can measure the delta from a good shot, add the values to detainee how close to ideal a particular photo is, then choose the overall “luckiest” photos and stack them.

Mbourgon,

Yeah, I’m guessing your ideas and mine are going to be similar then; wish I could add more!

Mbourgon,

Agreed. Since I have no clue how, can someone crosspost this to ArtNouveau?

Mbourgon,

Machine & the Synergetic Nuts - Leap Second Neutral. Japanese jazz fusion.

Mbourgon,

Can’t use it when logging into the laptop. And parts of the network have to be typed in - it detects and rejects pasting (haven’t built out an autohotkey to see if that would work)

Mbourgon,

You have rocked my world. That’s freaking fantastic, both of them. I gotta get one of those. Thank you! Is there one that you prefer to the other?

Mbourgon,

Ordered an Only Key - they’re on sale, which is nice, but I think for my use case it’s easier, as well.

Thanks a ton!

Mbourgon,

Follow-up: dude, you rock! This thing is amazing. Thanks for the recommendation!

Mbourgon,

This is how our local food bank does it. When you give money to them, you’re not actually buying groceries. You’re paying for trucks, gasoline and drivers who go to the various grocery’s’ warehouses, who take what is nearing “throw out” and make it available for people.

This is why I laugh whenever a local grocery store has a “hunger food drive“ - there, you are literally just buying groceries for other people. Whereas our food bank prides itself on being able to feed people for $.20 a meal - it’s a huge force multiplier.

Give to your local area food bank.

Mbourgon,

What a shitbag. Sorry, corrupt shitbag.

Mbourgon,

No, he’ll still be there.

Sentinel - max number of times it can proc in a turn?

I’m looking at feats for my Monk. Last night we were fighting the phase spiders and the spiderlings came in. Because we hadn’t spread out enough, all of them came towards our group, so they were within melee range of me. I’m wondering if I would’ve gotten a reaction attack against each one (so… 6?), or if it’s a...

Mbourgon,

Ah! Okay, so even more limited, since normal AoO and reactions apply. Thanks!!

Mbourgon,

Thanks for the info on reactions and the star. Didn’t understand that. Thanks!

Continuity in Movies and Shows

Watching Ted Lasso right now, and all these characters that are working on their MacBook: when they get texted, they pick up their iPhones and read and reply there. Missed opportunities to show off Continuity. Show the phone notification, and then show the MacBook. I love responding on my MacBook. Or is it not that common?

Mbourgon,

Color Newtons? Now you’re just making me sad.

Mbourgon,

Oh come on, post insomnium’s Winter’s Gate (40min).

Mbourgon,

Whaaaaaaaaaaa??? Crazy talk. Okay, at least you like Moonsorrow…. Right?! ;)

Mbourgon,

Pour bleach down the tube once a month. There’s usually an opening for it.

Mbourgon,

My AC guy said that it prevents the sludge that’s trying to grow in the drain, from blocking it. Set a calendar reminder and do it once a month.

Mbourgon,

Yup. My guess is they somehow use AI to make it better, but no real difference

Mbourgon,

TANSTAAFL, but flipped sideways. Nice find!

What is the Difference Between "Sustainable Listening" and "Listening Time" for Earbuds? (sopuli.xyz)

I’m looking for new discreet earbuds. The listening time is very important. As you can see from the pic, there are 2 different times. Idk which one is the actual time the battery will last while continually playing. 4-5 hours is fine. 1.5 hours is not good at all.

Mbourgon,

My guess is, it’s a bad translation, and what they’re actually saying is that it’s an hour and a half total listening, but the case can recharge it twice

If you have really bad tinnitus, you can use your iPhone and Airpods Pro to get some relief. (lemmy.ninja)

As many tinnitus sufferers like myself know, the never-ending ringing in your ears can become unbearable at times. Sometimes white noise can help by making it harder to distinguish the ringing from other sounds. I know I’ve run fans in my bedroom while falling asleep to help distract me, for example....

Mbourgon,

Dumb question - which Widex app? I came across this post, and am looking in the App Store. There’s a bunch: Widex Tonelink, Widex Beyond, Widex Zen, Widex Evoke, Widex Moment, Widex Enjoy….

Mbourgon,

Appreciate it!

Mbourgon,

I’ll give a dig into that, thanks for the effort, dude!

Mbourgon,

The various scenes in there are cool - Aristotle is conversing, Archimedes is showing geometry, etc.

Mbourgon,

but MAYYYYYYyYYYYYYYBEEeEEEEEE the RAIN! Is, uh, really to blame.
