One of these pulled up at my workplace today and I can not get over how stupid they look and that got me thinking, who thought making a shittier version of an Odyssey was a good idea....
The one that was out front had a 4" or less bed. How do you move 4x8 sheets without it hanging out the back? (at that point a van makes a better truck).
I am not in the states so 50k is the base price I looked up here. I have a 3/4 shitbox truck with a v8 that is carbureted (for yard work and towing a 5th wheel a few times a year) it gets better fuel economy then this, please tell me you don’t think this is good on gas.
I like the Baja, this “thing” is not a Baja. It is so far from anything like that that it confuses me that you think that they are even in the same category.
The more I look at the new big little trucks the more I can not believe the bad fuel economy being sold as green-eco-greatness in these things.
A sibling of mine gets to use a fleet truck though work and they got a new ford platinum 1/2 ton truck, stupid fancy. That thing gets 12 to 14 liters per 100k, and that is not great but not bad. But the kicker is THIS THING IS A HYBRID! how does a 1/2 ton truck costing $100k with so much tech and eco marketing not even compete with a b2000 mazda from 1988 (supposed to be the same class fyi)?
I guess I am just lamenting the death of neat small trucks and cars. This thing is not good on gas, the same size (width and length) as a full size truck, has the same visibility issues that plague new trucks, and seemingly is trying to be all things at the same time.
I get it, you don’t have a lot of options in today’s market, but this seems like we are going backwards.
I am not just bitching about the looks (they are silly but that is subjective). My issue is that this is what now passes for a “reasonable” small truck.
It is a Honda, I am sure it will outlast most other manufactures and be reliable. I just don’t get how something this size can feel small, is it something to do with the cab?
Maybe that is what gets in my gears so much, that this is the more “responsible choice”. I was not comparing it to any crew cab (I think that four door trucks are a core issue) or any newer truck but the 1980s c20 it was parked near. I guess we have to look to the past for better fuel economy and size (and that is insane).
A dang El Camino is looking more like a rational useful truck when comparing to these things. The joke cars of the past are outdoing the modern car. Wild times.
Oh and the Chevrolet El Camino has 1000 lbs more towing capacity then this…
It seems like trucks are getting bigger and less useful every year. I am flabbergasted by how many times these giant Canyonero like monstrosities are outdone by station wagons and hatchbacks. Hell even some of the former cars have become SUVs (like the outback below) but seemingly lost space/utility:
My take is that these stupid new trucks are crap and developing in the wrong direction (also this one looks like a shopping cart, but that is subjective). If this is the “less-bad” pick up then there is no pick up worth buying (hey that might be a whole point as well).
I don’t hate this because it shares anything with the minivan, I hate this because it is worse then the minivan and is trying to fill a place in the market that used to be cool. Stop buying stupid giant truck like things. This is not good on gas (20% worse then the Odyssey), not small, still has a “a chest-high pedestrian-wacker hood line” and sticking up for these things just encourages more of them.
I see people with trucks to this all the time, you put the tarp down (so you don’t scratch your fancy bedliner) and when you want to empty it you use a shovel or whatever then grab the tarp in the back and pull it. Ta da, you dump the rest of the stuff out the back and get nothing left behind.
Fair enough, but waiting behind them in line for 20 min while they very meticulously put out their tarp has given me a negative outlook on tarp truck users.
It is a charge to drive an older (not better working or less polluting necessarily) model mode of transport in a particular area. It is not a test or anything. Most of these are enforced with licence plate readers and the info on the registry.
At least a heavy vehicle tax has some base in physics (more mass needs more energy to move and all that). The idea that new vehicles are better for emissions just due to when they are made is silly.
The older (until 2003 ish) Impreza can hold a whole ass washer/dryer/oven/dishwasher in the back no issue then they made it too round. I remember helping someone move and they had a stupid “truck” but could not get the bed cover off so me and my snoopy looking car moved all the appliances (3 trips) while the “truck” moved boxes and flat furniture.
Edit to add:
If you want to have a better chance at offroad with a subaru invest in a good skidplate and if really needed they have a higher clearance model. I have been places in them that the brodozers get stuck in seconds.
I am not a jeep fan but I don’t think I can put a 2 door YJ in the same category as say an escalade. We need to make trains and smaller cars cool again.
Experts say you should not spend more then 30% of your income on housing (shelter, heat, water, sewer and electricity). If you need a car (live outside a city, have bad city planing, etc.) then this is one more pressure on people.
The current “normal” world exists now only for people making a lot more then the average.
Ok, so there is no public transit here and even though I walk and use my peddle powered bike for in town whenever I can, I would not be able to make a living without a car like thing. No one with half a working brain is thinking that their daily driver is an investment. Hell a lot of people (me in the past) spend more working time in that car then not. A car like device is not a optional luxury for most people in North America. This is sadly the world we live in outside of major (and even not all major) cities.
Sorry, this sounds weird to me. If I need a car, but cars are too expensive I should sell mine to buy another? So if I have a beater on its last legs, I should not have a problem buying a working beater because my broken one will be worth more?
Try this same argument with houses, unless you don’t plan on living in one the math does not work.
And nether of those things are needed for a car to be unaffordable. It is like you don’t know what a car costs that works. used prices for absolute garbage is high due to the fact most of the market can not even think of buying new cars. Less new cars means less used cars later.
I would also point out the human trafficking by pimping out your own child. Really need some sort of extra charge for that one, something about abusing a position of power.
So I want te find the most feature rich smartwatch that doesn’t send data to the manufacure. I have tried the Pinetime watch, but it died after 6 months....
I ride a motocycle and listen to books in my helmet, I got a pinetime (great btw) so I can control my audio and have gps. Other then gluing a phone to my gas tank (I have done, its not safe or good) there is not really an option other then a watch.

The average car purchased in 2023 emits higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) than its 2013 equivalent. This is due to the large proportion of SUVs in the mix, which tend to be bigger and heavier. (english.elpais.com)
