JohnnyCanuck,

Police also seized 1.1 kilograms of fentanyl, 3.6 kilograms of methamphetamine, 2.5 kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of MDMA and various quantities of other drugs.

Umm… Isn’t that pretty small? (as far as “major” drug operations go…)

JohnnyCanuck,

United Federation of Poindexters

JohnnyCanuck,

Star Trek Timelines claimed… Now to see what that means lol

JohnnyCanuck,

Thanks!

JohnnyCanuck,

I was recently coding in javascript and it was actually fucking awesome. Not because it’s a good language or anything like that…

It’s awesome because ChatGPT/copilot is really really good at writing/analyzing/debugging javascript. I’m guessing it’s because almost everything ever written in javascript is basically open source, so there is a ton of LLM training material. But whatever the reason, pretty much anything I asked it for, it could write, and I got a ton of shit done super quick.

JohnnyCanuck,

but No Man’s Sky absolutely smashes Starfield in this department

I had high hopes for No Man’s Sky based on how people talked about it but was left underwhelmed. I found it boring and repetitive.

Starfield took a lot longer before it started feeling that repetitive (to me.) I put many more hours into Starfield (than NMS) without even thinking about it.

I just rolled credits on Starfield last night and went back to keep playing because I have a ton of unfinished quests and some goals for building my spaceship. With No Man’s Sky I felt like there was nothing else to find.

(All that said, I do find a lot of the writing pretty lackluster, the planets now feel boring to look at and now predictable as to what will be there, and I do not particularly enjoy running around trying to find the last things to scan for very little payoff.)

JohnnyCanuck,

That makes so much more sense. Thank you.

JohnnyCanuck,

Electing the Greens with a majority would be a start…

JohnnyCanuck,

When watching sports on tv, half the ads are for sports betting. It’s disgusting.

JohnnyCanuck,

You’re all going to downvote me for this, but review bombing them and calling for boycotts because they raised their prices is fucking bullshit.

The worst part of this is that this is directly from the “fans” of the game who will spend hundreds of hours playing this thing and yet see no value in the work by the developers. If it’s too expensive for you, don’t buy it and move on. Get over yourselves.

(and don’t come in here and say some bullshit about it just being DL-fucking-C. It still takes work, and it still has value or you wouldn’t be whining so much about wanting it so bad.)

(and to be perfectly clear, as you’ll probably tell from below, I was a game developer, but I wasn’t a dev on this game. I did, however, work on a similarly niche fan-base game and did many crunches and DLCs)

As a group, you’ll lament the treatment of developers (the people) and how they shouldn’t be laid off, and shouldn’t be overworked, and they should hire more QA, and studios shouldn’t be closing blah blah fucking blah.

Then you’ll all turn around and scream at those same developers because there are bugs, and the game isn’t what you wanted, and you’ll call them lazy, and incompetent and you’ll tell them they don’t deserve to live or at the very least even have that overworked, underpaid job they’ve toiled at for the past x years.

Then the Developers (the business) will do something like (jeebus forbid) raise their prices, trying to make enough money to hire more developers to make better games, or pay their workers so they’re not underpaid, or hire more so they don’t have to overwork the rest, or as is happening more and more, avoid shutting down completely.

I wish every gamer had to work through crunch on at least one game (or even DLC) and see the amount of work and passion and skill goes into making games. Because right now, you (as a group) seem to think there’s no value in the work to make that product you brag about spending hundreds of hours playing. Go get a job in the game industry, if it’s so easy, so you can see the value in the product (and afford to buy it, or at least know not to be a yappy little bitch about the price.)

JohnnyCanuck,

Review bombing is not “stating your opinion”. It’s malicious.

(Edit to add: one of the big reasons for crunch is trying to squeeze work out of a fixed amount of money, which is the whole point of this. Saying there shouldn’t be crunch is irrelevant.)

JohnnyCanuck,

Total war is practically a Madden game with per team dlc. They deserve the criticism. They do yearly releases of various themes on the same engine with minor improvements.

Then why are people buying it!? If it has no value, then a price change makes no difference. You don’t like it, don’t buy it!

I’m not supporting publishers. The actions by the “fans” are doing absolutely nothing to the publishers!

JohnnyCanuck,

These “protests” do nothing against the execs and their Ferraris.

They directly harm the developers though.

JohnnyCanuck,

So review bomb and make it worse?

JohnnyCanuck,

Review bombing is not the same as just giving a bad review

JohnnyCanuck,

Exactly. That’s what I’m complaining about! These attacks by the “fans” are harming the developers, not the publishers.

JohnnyCanuck,

This isn’t attacking the company though. It’s attacking a single game and the company/publisher will just roll on through.

JohnnyCanuck,

So it can be argued that people, at this point, are not buying it.

That’s fair.

Open sourcing the app

@kuro_neko have you ever thought about making the app open source? I’ve used Connect for a little bit and I really like it, it would be really cool if the app was open source. You practically don’t have anything to loose, as you don’t sell the app or insert ads and trackers. Lemmy is an open-source plattform, and many (if...

JohnnyCanuck,

Is development dead on it?

JohnnyCanuck,

Oh yeah, that’s not what I meant. I just mean I feel like the developer has abandoned it. I don’t know if they’re even looking at this community anymore.

JohnnyCanuck,

Okay, good to hear! App is solid!

JohnnyCanuck,

Good news, dev just replied to me, not abandoned.

JohnnyCanuck,

At least they treat everyone equally (shitty)?

Is there any way I can stop seeing sports posts?

I don’t know if this was asked before and I don’t know how to look for that so I’m sorry if this is a repeat but, I keep seeing American football posts which I couldn’t care less about and I keep blocking the communities but they’re like thousands of millions of communities that never end. And no, I don’t wanna stick...

JohnnyCanuck,

Weird, I never see any sports posts (and would be mildly interested in them.) What communities are you seeing them from and how are you browsing Lemmy?

JohnnyCanuck,

What instance are you logged into and what are your Jerboa settings (are you filtering by Local/All, are you sorting by Hot?)

JohnnyCanuck,

I’m pretty sure it’s the game asking.

JohnnyCanuck, (edited )

I wish these polls would ask those same parents if they support outing children to abusive parents when doing so might endanger the child.

They did, and they do: “Just under half said that [teachers should have to notify parents] even if a child tells their teacher they don’t feel safe informing their parents.”

JohnnyCanuck,

The main setting I want is to be able to play at 1080p full screen. My laptop is 4K but can’t handle starfield at that resolution. It was running at 10fps rendering at 50% and upscaling, and looked like dog shit. I had to change windows to 1920x1080 (instead of the native 4K) to run the game at a 30fps - and at medium everything. Who makes a game where you can’t change the full screen resolution?

JohnnyCanuck,

I’m sorry, but your reasoning is absolute nonsense. Maybe game developers should unionize, but suggesting that it should work like Hollywood is pretty ridiculous.

The huge studios would function just like in Hollywood.

Okay, so fuck the developers at big studios just like how most of the people working on movies get fucked now? You think because a deal was reached by the union that the big studios aren’t still just running to the bank with their loads of cash? The recent strike (and most strikes in Hollywood) were mostly about residuals. You know why? Because people who aren’t above the line in the credits get shit pay. At least in the games industry most people are employees, get paid up front, have a salary, and whether the game succeeds or flops they get their money. And most people don’t get laid off between games. You’re getting paid your salary even while there is downtime. In Hollywood, if the movie flops(*), you’re shit outta luck, my friend. Hope you’re happy with whatever you made during production and you’re able to find your next gig quick. Because you’re not an employee of the studio, you were working for a production company on this one movie and now you gotta fend for yourself because the movie’s done and so is this LLC.

(*) which brings us to the big fucking asterisk in how Hollywood “works”. Movies don’t make money. Not on paper anyway. It’s so bad, it even has its own name: Hollywood Accounting. The gist of it is that they use creative accounting techniques so that profit sharing agreements (like the residuals that were just fought so hard for by the unions) pay as little as possible.

And yeah they would want to pump out those blockbusters, but nothing would stop indie developers from developing.

What stops indie developers from developing now? Indie game developers have it way better than indie movie makers. They have better platforms for distribution, a larger audience, and much lower cost to entry.

I would allow for consistent and fair discussions for the unions and studios as to how pay will be done.

Yeah, because that’s what Hollywood is known for…

It will also put in safeties for crunch and other abuses.

Crunch (and other abuse) still happens in Hollywood production, so… Nope, sorry.

I’m just saying [the Hollywood model] makes way more sense as a model for how modern AAA games are made.

No fucking way. As someone who was a salaried employee for 15 years in the A to AAA game industry over 7 projects, some of which failed but I still got paid, with bonuses and stock awards and job security, please fucking no. I’m glad I didn’t have to fight for a new gig every couple of years and hope for residuals.

JohnnyCanuck,

Yeah this is another point I could have added to my rant…

JohnnyCanuck,

Jobs in the video game industry (especially AAA) are mostly NOT freelance. Most are full time employee positions. Even non-AAA and specialized studios that do work-for-hire tend to have employees. Certain parts of the video game industry, like art and QA tend to be contracted or outsourced, but even then the contractors are often provided through a 3rd party company that employs and provides benefits. Contracts for engineers, designers, writers come into play for shorter periods to ramp up numbers during production and fill gaps. But that’s usually a small percentage of the team.

JohnnyCanuck,

The article did say they were blocking prompts with prominent names: “DALL-E 3 developer OpenAI had promised it would not generate pictures from prompts featuring prominent names.”

JohnnyCanuck,

Because if he gets it he will be given the inside scoop. But part of the deal with security clearance is that you are now in a circle of trust, and now you can’t talk about whatever it is you now know about with people outside that circle.

That includes complaining about what’s not happening because that might reveal info as well. That’s the last thing he wants, since that’s his entire modus operandi.

JohnnyCanuck,

Well they’ll plant some trees and buy some credits. Job done.

JohnnyCanuck,

Reading comments it sounds like there is more to this. GamingHeads sounds pretty shady, not completing orders, bad support, etc. Also this open letter is pretty unprofessional.

I’m not a big Sony fan but this seems like it isn’t necessarily an example where Sony is the asshole!

JohnnyCanuck,

This is really neat. I haven’t been able to figure out how to read the NAND and NOR gate examples though.

Is there a good comp sci community on Lemmy?

JohnnyCanuck,

That’s a huge ask. As a former game dev, reading things like that would break me if I was one of the affected ones.

Remember the devs are people. You’re asking them to redo a lot of work with very little upside.

JohnnyCanuck,

Is the video available anywhere not Xitter?

JohnnyCanuck,

At the bottom of the chain on mastodon the creator says they use the search APIs of the store websites. I wouldn’t have expected those to be easily accessible!

JohnnyCanuck,

They use the search APIs of the grocery store websites.

JohnnyCanuck,

Any extensions you would suggest for GIMP?

JohnnyCanuck,

Yeah agreed but because of the lack of rent control they don’t have to. That’s my point. They hold a lot of power being able to do what they want with rent changes alone.

JohnnyCanuck,

I was wondering thia too. Without control, they can probably just lower it again once the tenants leave.

JohnnyCanuck,

I didn’t catch that it doubled. Jeez. Landlord is a tool.

JohnnyCanuck,

Maybe post it again. I’ve already asked a couple times…
