My problem is that people talk as if these are the only options.
There are other services, like VRBO, that do the same thing and usually have the same properties. AirBNB is garbage now, so just use an alternative that doesn’t have the same bad policies and high fees.
Found this post super informative as it relates to Mastodon, and thought Lemmy might also benefit from this perspective. I’m not sure I share his optimism, but his points seem sound to dampen some of the alarm bells over Meta joining the Fediverse.
There’s a 90% probability that Threads takes over from the failing Twitter. Nothing will change. No one will learn anything. More of everyone’s data will be stollen.
Yeah moving to a federation alternative seems like it would be extremely welcomed in that type of community. They would have a lot more freedom in posting whatever content they wanted without being bothered by the reddit admins.
Pirates are notoriously good at finding the content they are looking for, so a "hidden" community on Lemmy would still thrive.
It took me months to actually start using Lemmy and Mastodon. I would consider myself a tech savvy person and it still took a while getting used too. I think there need to be better tutorials linked on the sign-up pages that help people understand the basic concepts. That would help drive true user acquisition.
Karma is a great method of driving interaction, but like you've highlighted, it can result in a lot of unwanted behaviors.
Other social media is a good example of what to be avoided. People are driven to gather more followers and their content devolves into the lowest common denominator rapidly.
I wouldn't mind some form of recognition for people that contribute good content to communities, but I don't know exactly what that would look like.
As far as karma goes, we have a technological limitation in the fediverse, where your karma would be limited to the instance your user account is registered on. They could figure out how to make it work, but I'm just not sure it's worth the effort. We have a lot of other things to focus on atm.
I have a theory that there is a impossible trinity (like in economics), where a food cannot be delicious, cheap and healthy at the same time. At maximum 2 of the 3 can be achieved....
Chicken is all of these things. I food prep chicken dishes because I need the right amount of protein. It's delicious and it's one of the cheapest types of meat.

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down....

Can someone tell me the reason why these people don't want to leave Reddit?

The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit (kbin.social)
