The short answer is “it’s complicated but yes, and practically no.” Nuclear submarines have the operation range to obfuscate their location orders of magnitude better than diesel. Diesel is quieter but their range makes tracking infinitely more feasible. “A needle in a haystack vs a splinter in pail of hay.” Nuclear is better at power projection, diesel is better at short range defense/offense.

The long answer is yes, with a great deal of patience, you can condition yourself into just about anything. Breaking from an addictive personality is far from easy and requires a deep understanding of yourself and your triggers. Introspection and therapy aplenty. There can be relapses or worse if you try to hack together a treatment plan for yourself. Support groups can be helpful and leaning on friends and family, when possible, can make or break you.

It stems from your character being a blank slate that you act through. They don’t bring much story with them, just your headcanon and whatever you enact. It’s a true RPG in that way. I think that’s part of the reason people end up going the horny route, it’s a means of placing yourself in the story and becoming part of all of these fantastic characters. The main character is only as interesting as you make them.
