CodexArcanum,

I liked when Karl talked about speed runs and showcased great moments in gaming. But, I guess he learned from the Billy Mitchell saga that drama gets way more views. 🤷‍♂️

CodexArcanum,

I liked the Elite Force games when I was a teen, but I grew up with and still love WinTrek! archive.org/details/win3_WinTrek

CodexArcanum,

You really aren’t missing much, but it’s still a shame for any game to be memory-holed like this.

CodexArcanum,

You mean, it’s all Electron? 🌍👨‍🚀🔫👩‍🚀

CodexArcanum,

I hate group checks for this kind of thing. I mainly only use them for perception or knowledge checks (always fun when one person is oblivious). For group tests like stealth or athletics for a chase it’s probably better to either build a challenge out of it so other skills can apply and more checks balance the luck factor, or just let one player be skill leader and make the check with appropriate penalties if part of their challenge is managing the clanky loud orc in plate.

CodexArcanum,

You P’takh! The red zone is for transporting and untransporting of life forms! There shall be NO stopping in the white zone!

CodexArcanum,

Wibbly-wobbly nerky-networky things

CodexArcanum,

And frankincense, one of two other gifts of the magi. The third is unaromatic gold, of course. Here’s some jewelry and a bunch of funeral scents kid, hope your step-dad got you a toy.

CodexArcanum,

Just recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he hopes Starfield will be a 12-year hit, just like Skyrim.

Yeah no fucking shit Phil, the fans would have loved a generation-defining megahit as well! Maybe you should have told Todd to try making the game good as well as marketable?

CodexArcanum,

When I was your age, a family size bag fed the entire family. Now I can barely keep one toddler in crispy fried potatoes! What kind of world is this to raise a child in?!

CodexArcanum,

Since there’s only one bathroom, I’ve been assuming that engineering just teleports all the bodily waste out of the crew and directly into the replicators’ matter feeds, Hogwarts-style. Saves time, keeps the crew light and active, keeps the transport operators sharp while between planets.

CodexArcanum, (edited )

I think that this is canonically untrue. Federation vessels do have multiple bathrooms or “heads” in military jargon, including personal ones attached to officer quarters.

However, Memory Alpha does corroborate the version I remember, which is Frakes talking on some behind the scenes special about how there’s only one bathroom on the entire Enterprise-D. Scroll down a bit to the “Background” section. memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Bathroom

(And if you’re surprised there’s a MA page for just this topic, I am too, and probably shouldn’t be.)

CodexArcanum,

Nobody cared who I was before snapping on the mask

CodexArcanum,

Seems like a technicality: she legally* couldn’t hold a job but was obviously doing the work. (fingersnaps, yassssss nagus)

Likewise, Garak has a job (tailor, salesperson) and also, allegedly, has real power and influence within the Cardassian spy-network/government.

The Prophets though, legit, those trans-corporeal bums can go get a real job. “We exist beyond linear time” yeah buddy, I like to get high and sit on the couch too but we all need to eat.

CodexArcanum,

Those salacious curves on the

really close the deal

CodexArcanum,

Reminds me of D&D how the party can have a full strategy session between rounds like the Lich King can’t hear them and also took a 10 minute breather between spells. I do occasionally as DM remind people that they’re in the middle of a fight, especially when analysis paralysis sets in.

A lot of comics and cartoons stretch time a bit for talking. Jojo really abuses the concept though, they’ll pause mid-punch for a legit science lecture!

CodexArcanum,

…fandom.com/…/Category:Lightsaber-resistant_mater…

I was thinking of the one from Dark Forces, but I guess all of these are non-canon now?

CodexArcanum,

Feel better Stamets! I too have a case of Thanksgiving covid. Seems to be spreading very badly this season, i know many people who also caught it this week.

CodexArcanum,

I’d PaaS on that offer, smells suspicious.

CodexArcanum,

We used to play with the house rule that draws stack and transfer until the player is unable to play some kind of deflection. Nothing like sending grandma packing with a Draw 16 stack! (Who am I kidding, granny was the one always whipping our asses at cards! 😭)

CodexArcanum,

“Masking” is a thing neurodivergent people talk about a lot, but it’s comparable to comparing “normal clothes” and costumes or drag. There is no “normal.” When you get dressed for the day, you’re putting on a costume. Maybe it’s a business suit or a uniform, but maybe it’s just “your look” for the day.

The thing is that “you” don’t exist. There’s memory continuity of the consciousness that drives your body each day, but how you act to other people, the beliefs you have, and the clothes you wear are all part of a complex construction that you think of as yourself. But none of that is individually “you.” If you put on a costume, you would probably act different: you’d be “in-character” but you probably don’t think about this as being a different you, you still feel like yourself, just wearing a costume.

But if you changed your clothes, changed your interactions with others, changed your beliefs, then people would say “you’ve changed” as though you had shifted into a different person.

Everyone puts on masks for different groups of people. You wear a professional mask at work, an extrovert mask when out with friends, an intimate mask (which maybe feels like no mask at all) with family. Social media puts social pressure and often monetary pressure behind maintenance of a particular mask/identity. The fact that so many people are aware of the artiface of it is what you’re seeing.

It used to be that most people’s days were split up into a home period, a work period, a recreational period, etc. With the modern “always online, always available” world, our masks have become fluid and a constant part of us. Instead of putting on your work face in the morning and taking it off after a long day, you have to constantly be ready to break out the correct persona at any time, depending on who is contacting you on the phone. This leads to more “cracks” in the masks. People aren’t “more fake,” they’re revealing more of themselves than intended because the masks keep slipping. This doesn’t necessarily reveal any “true self” either because there is no such thing. Rather it let’s the common parts slip out more (most people hide a lot of their personal selves from work colleagues) and reveals the contradictions in the other parts that normally can embe kept seperate.

CodexArcanum,

This is why I stick to Rust. The gender affirming surgery takes some getting used to, but at least I have both legs.

CodexArcanum,

I’ve dealt with depression for most of my life, but with a lot of work and medicine and care, it’s possible to get past self loathing and pity. And then, you can stretch “staring into the abyss” into an all day activity as you reflect on how good personal mental health doesn’t make the world less of a nightmare!

CodexArcanum,

“Come on everyone, we have to solve this riddle! What if the missing Scepter of Glorificon is in there?”

“No we have to turn back! The lich ghost of the octo-king could be waiting for us, seeking revenge after we defeated him in his aquatic lair beyond time!”

“GM, I ask the old sage NPC if they know what’s past the riddle.”

Me, furiously scribbling notes and scratching things out: “Oh uh, they laugh heartily at your comments about the lich ghost. ‘Hohoho, the octo-king back so soon, that’s just ridiculous! But I know not what is beyond the door, the ancient prophicies say it is both what you most fear and desire…’”

CodexArcanum,

Activision promises to solve issue by giving CEO a 3 billion dollar bonus, adding more fees and microtransactions, and firing the entire QA and dev staff.

CodexArcanum,

The “Kubrick Stare” is one of Stanley Kubrick‘s most recognizable directorial techniques, a method of shot composition where a character stares at the camera with a forward tilt, to convey to the audience that the character in question is at the peak of their derangement.

CodexArcanum,

Yes, in Children of Dune, Leto 2 undergoes the water rite or something like that, and the concentrated spice in him makes sand trout (baby worms) cling to his skin and form an armor over his entire body except the face. And then 4000 years later in God Emperor, him big worm.

The worm armor makes him super strong and fast, but i don’t remember him doing a lot with that in the books.

CodexArcanum,

Oh right, that!

Been a while since I read them and my enjoyment of the series drops with each further book (except for the fun spike of b-movie wackiness in Emperor).

CodexArcanum,

It do be like that sometimes

CodexArcanum,

I like how the headline mentions the toilet is “satirical” as if they were worried people might think they had a non-ironic 18k solid golden toilet. I’m sure the thieves were only stealing the toilet as a parody of crime.

CodexArcanum,

good toilet named America

A good toilet in America, now that would be ironic 😉

Did racist use the "biological advantage" argument when Black athletes started competing alongside white athletes?

Given that racists and slavers used the “natural physical strength” of black people to justify putting them on hard labor and some medics still think that blacks has higher resistance to pain, I wonder if when black athletes started to join mixed race sport teams, some racist would have used the same “biological...

CodexArcanum,

I’m not trying to be pedantic, but I want to draw your attention to what you said about being unsure about the person’s motives. If a person says something like “they (a group of people) are bred different” then that’s racist. It doesn’t matter if the person is a bigot or openly hates people for their skin color or not; that kind of belief is eugenics and is a racist belief.

Good people, well-intentioned people, can be and are racists, because they are raised with certain ideas and beliefs that are rooted in racism. The things that pop into heir head are racist because they haven’t taken time to look into their own beliefs and understand where they come from, to de-racialize their thinking.

Or, you know, they’re bigots and like having racist thoughts because it serves the bigotry, but that’s a different problem.

When the ketracel black hits

CodexArcanum,

This reminds me of when Jared left Wisecrack, or when literally everyone left Cracked. I felt it coming too, same pattern as many before: the ZP videos started pushing for premium subs with more ads and censoring Yahtzee, and there were more shows with Yatz and a cohost. They always start by pushing the video stars to do stuff with new (cheaper, unknown, less interesting) people because The Company thinks all people are replaceable gears.

Good for the entire video team just quiting, the writing has clearly been on the wall for a while. Maybe he can do work with Stephanie Sterling again? I used to love their team ups!

CodexArcanum,

Earthworm Jim and several Sonic games also had really difficult underwater sections with traumatizing drowning music and timers. They really wanted our generation to stay out of the water, huh?

CodexArcanum,

Also, I learned to give up on games from the infamous Atari ET game, which was one of the like 3 games at grandma’s house. Even understanding what’s happening on screen is difficult, let alone figuring out what you’re supposed to do.

CodexArcanum,

I was just thinking he hadn’t released a video in a long time. Now I know why! It’s crazy to think that Eve is still going, can’t wait to see what’s been happening with it!

TIL about this tool, the *Reinigungsschaber* ! (lemmy.world)

I had lost hope with my electric cooking plates. The white circles where completely hidden under a layer of diamond-grade burn residue that no amount of scrubbing with chemicals could even begin to remove. I found this 3€ scrapping tool and it’s amazing !!! Sorry, but I don’t have the before picture, believe me after 6...

CodexArcanum,

It can, yeah. You have to be careful to press gently in the center of the blade and not put pressure on the corners which will gouge huge scratches into glass. I have one of these for cleaning my paint pallette and get double-duty out of it on oven cleaning day.

They make cleaning kits for these stove tops that typically come with a cheaper plastic version of the tool with a weaker metal razor. Still does the job well, but less scratching chance. Also usually comes with a fine-grain polishing cream and sponges to apply it with. The cream helps to buff out lighter scratches and remove some of the cooked on stuff.

CodexArcanum,

For the vast majority of (American) people, their reaction to the true realization of climate change is going to be one of:

  1. gurgle, gulp, drowning noises
  2. ah, oh no, gunshots, silence
  3. so hot today, ugh, sound of body hitting ground, silence
  4. "That fire isn’t so close yet!" burning sounds, screaming, silence
