Reminds me of that crazy scene from Picard where they get holographic popup ads on their ship.
It might just be my crazy conspiracy theory brain, but I feel like they’re trying to normalize advertising in a supposedly idyllic and utopian future society to make us see them as more of a necessity than they actually are. Same thing with Raffi living in poverty and Picard having private ownership of the means of production (his vineyard) with employees. So much for that “money-free socialist utopia.”
One thing that would probably work for news sites that I haven’t seen would be to give subscribers access to articles a day or so earlier than non-subscribers. No article limit or anything like that, decent freedom of information, and minimal incentive to make clickbait bullshit that nobody will subscribe to.
I was wondering, with all the different Lemmy clients and frontends, what/which out of these do people actually use? To answer this, I made a poll if anyone wants to fill it out, and I tried to put every client I could find.
I know you bought your car 10 years ago, but you refused to make an account with the company that bought your car dealer out after you bought a car from them, so now we’re repossessing it.
I had the same initial reaction as Tender, but your comment made me realize that not using this policy doesn’t really help keep drivers safe anyway. Plus, a driver can pull over and make a passenger get out, but a passenger can’t force the driver to let them out as easily.
I think it is more probable than not that you are right, but easily conceivable that you are wrong. What if, **for example, ** it was shown that men were more likely to victimize someone on impulse with 0 planning, while women would plan it out and therefore use the gender preference system?
If there was even a chance a boycott would be feasible, they wouldn’t be doing what they’re doing. The only way to force change is to force it. Voting with your wallet is bullshit and won’t work against an oligopoly.
One company caving about one thing doesn’t cancel out the overall trend of enshittification and subscription bullshit. Things are getting worse on the whole because voting with our wallets just doesn’t work well enough to beat back all the corporations trying to take advantage of us.
Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation and race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.
I don’t know why you went with something that individual internet neckbeards do.
A self-replicating swarm of fighter drones would be far more devastating than almost all of the weapons we see in the Star Trek universe. You could send a few off to some random uninhabited solar system to suck it dry and come back with literally trillions of small unmanned drones capable of overwhelming entire civilizations with ease. Of course, there’s always the threat of them going rogue or being taken over by someone else.
I normally use the Aurora frontend, but I used Google’s app to check something. I couldn’t help but notice that when I swiped and then let go, the page would barely move past the point I had let go. It had no momentum whatsoever. As soon as I got past the ads, scrolling was back to normal and the exact same flinging motion...
At this point, the play store has such a monopoly that they can do whatever the fuck they want. That’s why there are so many ads.
In my opinion, software that can be considered required for hardware that you’ve paid for to work (OS/system level apps) should not be allowed to have ads by law. It’s also a double infraction when they bait’n’switch you by slowly rolling out more and more ads on a phone you already bought.
Experience-based vendor lock-in while getting bait’n’switched with increasing amounts of ads is not a consumer choice. To assert otherwise is extremely ignorant of the power dynamics between individual consumers and the duopoly that we have in the phone market.
I do block ads on the DNS level. You’re probably running a modded version of the client without realizing it.

The only reason this isn’t the default is because sowing racial division is a great way to keep us bickering amongst ourselves while the rich get richer.
The real subjugated class in modern times is the working class. Due to historic reasons, black people are more likely to find themselves not inheriting wealth and therefore being part of the subjugated class. That doesn’t mean we should prop them up and not everyone else who is in the exact same position but has a different skin color.
That’s… strange. I’m on Voyager and it says 24 days when I check their profile. I think you might be looking at the age of the comment instead of the account.
It’s a personal risk assessment in the same way that following the speed limit is a personal risk assessment. After all, if it’s just your car going 80 in a 25, it couldn’t possibly affect other cars!
You are incorrect. Vaccinated individuals can be carriers of an infection, but vaccines do lower the spread of COVID-19. They can reduce the amount of time you are contagious or prevent you from being meaningfully infected whatsoever. Meaningful difference.
Could be lol. Then you have stuff like the Monty Hall problem that even smart people can struggle to wrap their heads around. Probability is complicated.
