@NicoleCRust@academicchatter Now that would be a writing exercise:
"Transition to sustainable livestock systems is super important but people are stupidheads so we can't figure out how to do it. Money PLZ."
New study warns "that protracted PhDs and lengthy postdoctoral stints are holding back even the best scientists from 'achieving independence and tenure'."
Author argues that "universities should have more flexible rules that allow them to promote people quicker if they prove to be 'really outstanding in their early steps' [...and that] funding should shift to younger scientists,"
@erinnacland@academicchatter@ingorohlfing How does such a laudable goal contribute to the university's paramount goal: Institutional aggrandizement? I can't see that it does. Seems the university's goal is best served by maintaining PhD wannabes as a powerless and dependent money stream.
One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 144 years!
In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to study how long buried seeds would remain viable. He buried bottles w different seeds in a secret spot on Michigan State's campus.
Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists dig up the bottles & seeds continue to germinate 🌱 (My husband @DavidLowry is the one on the right).
‘Tis the season to remember that all of Santa’s reindeer are female.
You see, males drop their antlers after the Autumn mating season, so since the world’s most celebrated reindeer are always depicted with spectacular antlers, we must assume that Ol’ Saint Nick’s entire intrepid team - including Rudolph - are female. #science#Christmas
@eharlitzkern@academicchatter today is the day the workers of WaPo are on strike, and they ask people do not click on WaPo links for 24h on December 7th in solidarity! Wait to read until tomorrow...
Meanwhile over on the ex-bird site, giant doomsday accounts are peddling nonsense like this.
Part of what is funny/sad is how lazy these accounts are. The promoted video has a time stamp right at the bottom showing that it was taken a week ago!
@Sheril "When it comes to policy issues like climate change and public health, they frequently held the perception that scientists lack a broader understanding of how their recommendations might impact the economy, national security, or simply, the next election."
I mean, yeah OK but also people are dying and entire agriculture communities are at risk from global climate changes that politicians ignored and that are impacting the economy and national security.
