Last night I finished Starling House by Alix Harrow. I had no idea what it was about when I started it, but I loved it. It's hard to describe without spoilers, but it's a complex story of families and poverty and bad luck woven into a great haunted house story. It wasn't scary, just creepy. Alix Harrow is now one of my favorite authors, she's brilliant. @bookstodon#Bookstodon#Fantasy#HauntedHouse#AlixHarrow
You ever get the feeling that you just can’t read fast enough? I’m usually happy to mosey along, but this book I’m reading right now—Weyward, by Emilia Hart—is so interesting I just want to devour it, inhale it, consume aaaaall of it at once.
In November while in upstate New York, we took a small afternoon trip to Saratoga Springs, a small, relatively affluent college town near where @seanbala grew up. We made two stops. One was Lyrical Ballad Bookstore. It was an amazing warren of shelves and lots of old books, maps, newspapers, and pictures. Funny thing is that even though he grew up here, this was Sean's first time going!
I re-read Nicola Griffith's Hild a couple of weeks ago and edited that review. I made even more edits today, then added comments about the second book, Menewood. Both get my highest of recommendation. This link is for the full page.
Today's release: Speculation Publications' folklore/fairy tale anthology - Yule: Tales for the Winter Solstice.
During the cold winter months, we mirror the Earth as she lies quiet, waiting for the return of warm days. We gather around yule fires and perform rituals to lure back the sun. Drinking wassail...
Readers and Friends of readers!
If you like witty wordplay, endearing characters, and a sense of fun with your mystery: PJ Fitzsimmons is your man. His Anty Boisjoly Mystery series is SO delightful; I read the seven books this year, most twice! It’s the kind of book you have to read bits out loud to whomever else is in the room. Or, if you’re feeling shy, just laugh outloud (to yourself).
Looks like was here for half a second @pjfitzsimmons if he stops back, I’d like him to know he provided needed escape in this very tough 2023. Everyone else, check this series out and/or gift to your friends. @bookstodon #bookstodon#books
Read LOST IN THE MOMENT AND FOUND by Seanan McGuire if you love trauma narratives, grief, the uncertainty of childhood being exploited, magpies, lost things, found spaces, running away, the moment everything changes, teeth, journals & the addiction of novelty.
I started reading Praise, Book 1 in the Salacious Players Club series tonight. I've read 71 percent of it in the last few hours. It's a change from the dragon shifter books I've been reading for the last few days, that's for sure. @bookstodon@romancelandia#bookstodon@readinglightsout
Read WHERE THE DROWNED GIRLS GO by Seanan McGuire if you love nightmares, lost things, bathtubs, choices, oatmeal, dormitories, new schools, expectations, solitude, running away, deer, tiny girls, names, mysteries & unkindness.
I’m part of another StoryBundle, this one featuring ten collections of wintertime short stories, perfect for reading in line at the market, or curled up with a cup of tea.
My Solstice collection, A Flame for Yuletide, is included. This ebook bundle is “pay what you can.” Enjoy!
