This is sad but not unsurprising. And, it's why, although I applaud the idea behind Mastodon and engage quite regularly, I do not think it will be sustainable in the long run.
Thanks, Paul, for your efforts.
And yes, I'd love to know where people from econtwitter will migrate!
I have a feeling most academics will eventually go to BlueSky or continue on LinkedIn and maintain dwindling Twitter presence.

Posting is flexible regarding approach to the subject matter. Please spread widely within your networks. Feel free to direct questions to me, as I'm chairing the search. I'm happy to call UMass home. I ❤️ love my colleagues and students. A lovely, exciting place to work.
Since I am planning to delete my Twitter account soon, I am slowly deleting every post I made manually, so I can see what I posted (I also do not trust that they will delete the posts if I delete the account). A large portion of my replies are congratulating people on things like their newly published paper, graduating, getting a grant, etc. These kind of posts are what I miss about Twitter, and I hope more people come and post their successes on Mastodon. #AcademicChatter
@DrEvanGowan
What do you think is the best way to encourage more academics to switch?
I don't know the answer, nor do I think people should be actively persuaded. Maybe just creating an inviting alternative environment on Mastodon is enough, but the risk there is you never reach a network effect / gravitational pull. #academicchatter#mastodon#twitter @yetiinabox@academicchatter
Yay! Zettlr 3.0 (@zettlr) is finally out after an immense amount of work by developer @hendrikerz. It’s got some great new features — with more on the way — and has been an amazing tool with which to think, write, and take notes.
Proudest achievement of the year: I've managed to take almost all my leave in 2023, with only 3.5 days unused. Keeping them in case of a parenting or other emergency.
Colleagues, what are your favorite mid-to-long form articles and essays about #writing and #creativity
I’m teaching a new upper-level seminar on writing and creativity. We’ll be thinking about topics like process, inspiration, cognition, collaboration, and tech tools (generative AI, but not only that).
Chapters from Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird and Liz Gilbert’s Big Magic are already on my radar. What else do you suggest? What authors or creators’ reflections on their own work do you love to read?
Hey @sociology - can folks help my students get to a conference? A grad student and three undergrads I'm working with have had their work accepted to the Social Science History Association in November. We're an under-resourced MSI, and only need to raise a couple thousand dollars to get us from Chicago to DC. Every donation counts! Our Venmo is @UIC. THANK YOU!!!

'There are 40 scholarships (30 for full-time, 10 online study) for courses in engineering, environment, health sciences, development, #Education, textiles and law. The scheme is open to applicants from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.'
A question for humanities and social sciences colleagues. What are the best literature mapping tools for our disciplines?
I've tried Research Rabbit and found it ok, but I wonder if Connected Papers or similar might work better. A specific question is whether there is any tool that doesn't rely solely on Scopus or similar, but takes a broader sweep of the literature? Thoughts?
'Concerns about the decline of X as a source of reliable information extends beyond the scientific and academic communities. During the apparent coup attempt in Russia in June, journalists noticed its relative uselessness at helping them find real-time, breaking information from the ground and sifting fact from fakery, due in part to Musk’s trashing of its account verification system.'
Standing up for jobs at UHI. The process is a shambles and has been mismanaged from the start. I have strong feelings that my union activism has made me, and others, a target. Regardless, I'm not going quietly.
Anyone with practical tips, legal advice etc, hit me up cos I have no fucking idea what I'm doing!
