I logged onto Twitter for the first time in 5 months. It was interesting, kind of like that old pair of shoes that you forgot about, and when you're cleaning out your closet one day, you find them again. You try them on, and they feel great. You walk around a little bit, reminisce, and then take them off and put them back in your closet.

That was my feel of Twitter. It brought back great memories, but looking at it in perspective, I just outgrew it. #twitter #twitterexodus

Making people pay to tweet should be the nail in the coffin for ; but then again I thought turning it into a glorified Parler would've been that nail already. As they say, the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent.

says a lot of things. Whether he follows through is anyone’s guess. A lot of users have left / #X, and charging those who remain may hurt ad revenue. Also, the hate speech problem isn’t due to bots. It’s a human problen that’s a consequence of not doing moderation. And, it’s a problem that insists doesn’t exist; he’s suing the CCDH for insisting he does.

To the unofficial bots that mirror Twitter feeds, like journalists, news outlets, and sports teams, that remain on Twitter and use the platform, but cross post to fediverse, you are indirectly supporting hate and fascism.

I've said it countless times. If you remain on that platform, you are supporting their views and message, regardless of what your beliefs or denials may be.

There is no reason why in this day and age that municipal, state, provincial, and federal cannot stand up their own instances that they control to provide their citizens relevant information. Whether that be , , , , , or . Why should we have to rely on ( and ) or #x () for publicly funded and public relevant information and communication.

And don't try to say that knowledge is the problem. I bet at least half of their staff runs their own instances as a hobby, anyway.

Prominent "free-speech absolutist" threatens to sue Jewish anti-hate group because it engaged in free speech he didn't like.

"Elon Musk has threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League after accusing the civil rights group that campaigns against antisemitism and bigotry of trying to “kill” his X social media platform.

"The owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, said the ADL was trying to shut down his company by 'falsely accusing it and me of being antisemitic'."

If your list of enemies includes the ADL, then there's a more-than-reasonable chance that you're an anti-semite.

Since I am planning to delete my Twitter account soon, I am slowly deleting every post I made manually, so I can see what I posted (I also do not trust that they will delete the posts if I delete the account). A large portion of my replies are congratulating people on things like their newly published paper, graduating, getting a grant, etc. These kind of posts are what I miss about Twitter, and I hope more people come and post their successes on Mastodon. #AcademicChatter

What do you think is the best way to encourage more academics to switch?

I don't know the answer, nor do I think people should be actively persuaded. Maybe just creating an inviting alternative environment on Mastodon is enough, but the risk there is you never reach a network effect / gravitational pull. #academicchatter #mastodon #twitter

A useful thing for analysis of activity was that each tweet has the time in was created embedded in the ID - and can extract it!

Like tweets, IDs also have embedded timestamps in them, and Unfurl can parse them:

This means that as long as you have the URL of the tweet/toot, you can determine when it was posted - even if it has been deleted or made private!

'Concerns about the decline of X as a source of reliable information extends beyond the scientific and academic communities. During the apparent coup attempt in Russia in June, journalists noticed its relative uselessness at helping them find real-time, breaking information from the ground and sifting fact from fakery, due in part to Musk’s trashing of its account verification system.'

For years, the media built up Elon Musk and got the public to buy into the myth of his genius. Now the truth of who he is can’t be hidden and changing how they cover Musk isn’t enough.

The media failed us. They not only need to inform the public about the harms of Musk’s empire, but change how they cover the entire tech industry so another grifter can’t replicate his rise. They owe us nothing less.
