I'm trying to commission an illustrator who will turn somebody's PhD (on the subject of history solidarity / peace / anti-nuclear warfare in the 1980s) into a comic book strip / big cartoon-y poster. Not sure sure where to go looking - any ideas?
I'm in a tough point in my #PhD journey as changes in supervisory team are slowing things down and leaving me with a lot of uncertainty, while of course, I have like 1K of deadlines approaching.
So, for the first time in my life, I'm publicly admitting my mental health is in need of a boost, so please send good vibes :)
Cute pictures to remind me the beauty of our world are also welcome!
I start:
Here is my little cat Caffè tacitly reminding me the subtle art of not giving a f*
@alx@phdstudents I'm in my second semester of a masters program and I'm already stressed. I can't imagine what you are going through. Sending you a white-lipped mud turtle for emotional support. His name is Mushroom.

Currently writing an article that should be 8,000 words. I am now at 17,000 and I, as a beginner in professional academic writing, need some advice. I know I am the kind of person who thinks through writing. This means that I have probably written a lot that can be cut and left out.
But how do I learn to write reasonably lengthy papers? I swear I thought my topic and questions could be addressed in 8,000 words. I had an outline ... with word counts per section. Still, it went completely off the rails.
the best writing style varies, a lot, depending on the individual
that is my contention
so it is good to try different approaches, but if an approach doesn't work for you, then you should really try another approach
@natalie@academicchatter@phdlife@phdstudents I also tend to think through writing, and I routinely write 2-3X the word limit and then edit things down to size. It's not ideal, certainly, but I don't anticipate developing new habits at this stage in my career. The good news is that, if you save all the 'extra' material you can often repurpose it for other projects.
I’m worried that I will lose out professionally if I don’t have a work X/Twitter account. But I don’t want to go back into the cesspit. Is there an academic #psychology#PsychologyResearch community here in the Fediverse? Please boost #phd#phdchat#AcademicChatter
Feeling a bit better about the academic job market now that I've applied for some postdocs and fellowships. Two down, five or six more to go, with the hope that more opportunities pop up. Only two of those are for Croatia, though, so wish me luck! 🤞🏻
What was your experience getting your first job after your #PhD?
@armp71@academicchatter@academicsunite Wow, first of all - congratulations! I just hope I get something from the 7-8 applications this year :D .. If not, I might have to do something else, at least temporarily..
There is a concern that those with graduate degrees are leaving Canada to look for better opportunities elsewhere, contributing towards a "brain drain".
A new survey has been made to better understand the issue: If you are a current graduate student in Canada OR a graduate in the last 10 years please complete this 5-10 minute survey https://tinyurl.com/mrybapfp
@erinnacland@academicchatter@academicsunite I’m outside you parameters but when I graduated college a lot of us went south for a 6 figure US starting salary 20 years ago because we were so specialized. Here? It wasn’t even a livable wage.
Don't push yourself. It comes naturally with practice. You try to solve a problem, google it, find an answer, copy it, then you have the same problem and do it again, then again, and the next time you already remember how to do that and what functions to call.
Having been on both ends, the reality is ~300 people apply for one post and 3 to 5 are shortlisted. Many times, there's an internal candidate if not already working there, then someone with a #PhD or #Postdoc or close professional ties with the department.
One should still apply and hope. But, the disingenuousness should stop.
@prachisrivas@academicchatter@academicjobs While this is definitely a thing to various extents, to some degree I think it's understandable. You will usually prefer to keep your home-grown candidates, take a smart student assistent known in the group / who wrote their bachelor's/master's thesis / had all the right lectures, over taking a stranger you just get a job interview impression from. It might be unfair, but it's human and somehow also rational. Still of course there should be balance.
My issue is with the 'Come work for me' ridiculous way that departments and universities market jobs. They should just be really straightforward without the cutesy language.
And there are a lot of issues with going down the slippery slope of going with 'who you know'. It's exactly why academia (and other sectors) have all the equity problems they do.
@jconnellstryker@histodons@academicchatter I agree the proposals are not all practical. My institution grants terminal MAs but it actively discourages 2-year degrees. We have no indication that taking an additional year (nearly all of our MAs are 1-year) affects employment outcomes, while leading some students to disconnect entirely in the 2nd year, something can lead to failure to finish.
Re: PhD: IMO we need to push for increased packages for all admissions, regardless of external funding.
You would have to ask somebody who wrote for MA in my program how it really felt to do that and then continue on to PhD, but being friendlier to dipping out after 2 years with an MA seems like a good thing to me. Maybe even actively working to encourage (and accept) transfers to finish the PhD elsewhere after a 2-year MA would be a good idea, to encourage broader institutional experience?
Hey guys, I am sitting on the #PeerTube (#Federated#YouTube) domain peertube.science - I want to gauge how much of an interest in this for me to set up. Is there anyone interested in a non commercial video service like this for the sciences? Humanities are welcome too. :)
