Certainly not a fan (more like lesser of evils) regarding Meta and Microsoft, but I would like them to take legal action against Musk's new X.

Since high school in the 1980s I have been fan of the Los Angeles based punk band "X" and it would be some kind of wonderful if they could find a way to sue Musk and X the corporation also ;-)

@JustCodeCulture @histodons I doubt they have any rights here, sadly.

The word is registered for NICE classes 9, 41, 42, i.e. computer software and services etc., for the whole of the European Union (and I believe for the UK too, not checked). Server admins in those jurisdictions, you may want to avoid domains containing the word or at least get legal advice before deploying a server with such a domain - this could potentially be costly otherwise.

@choyer @sin @fediversenews to add one more example: gmail.pl was registered to some person and hosted a website for book lovers (that translated into gmail acronym). Court in Poland denied the claim to this domain and Google eventually paid him.

Is there a way to depose non elected officials like say, supreme court judges destroying the U.S.? Like a vote of no confidence?

aintist,
@aintist@mstdn.social avatar

@stevensrmiller @wynch

Yes, but requires 2/3 vote of the senate and republicans have an advantage in the senate because smaller states have same vote as larger more populous states.

And republicans have no problem with a corrupt court.

True, but I wasn't saying impeachment was likely to succeed. It's just an answer to the OP's question.

I suppose there are other avenues, like criminal prosecution and disbarment (though one need not actually be a lawyer to be a justice). Throngs marching in the streets have been known to yield results. None of these is certain either, however.

The only official procedure is impeachment.

Torture shatters life to fragments.

Today is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture – marking the adoption of the #UN Convention against Torture in 1987.

Yet, four decades later, torture has not been eradicated.

Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion of #Ukraine is a glaring example of violations of human #rights and international #law.

In response, the #EU works with Ukraine through a Joint Investigation Team.

Today and every day, we speak out for a world free from torture.

@febra@meow.social avatar

@EU_Commission What do you think about the forced use of emetics on prisoners and detainees. In some cases they can cause ruptures in the esophagus/trachea, bruises in the respiratory system, and even death.

Famous case from Germany where the doctor ended up walking free after causing the death of an immigrant in police custody by forcibly administering him emetics: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2376004/

The enforcement of copyright law is really simple.

If you were a kid who used Napster in the early 2000s to download the latest album by The Offspring or Destiny's Child, because you couldn't afford the CD, then you need to go to court! And potentially face criminal sanctions or punitive damages to the RIAA for each song you download, because you're an evil pirate! You wouldn't steal a car! Creators must be paid!

If you created educational videos on YouTube in the 2010s, and featured a video or audio clip, then even if it's fair use, and even if it's used to make a legitimate point, you're getting demonetised. That's assuming your videos don't disappear or get shadow banned or your account isn't shut entirely. Oh, and good luck finding your way through YouTube's convoluted DMCA process! All creators are equal in deserving pay, but some are more equal than others!

And if you're a corporation with a market capitalisation of US$1.5 trillion (Google/Alphabet) or US$2.3 billion (Microsoft), then you can freely use everyone's intellectual property to train your generative AI bots. Suddenly creators don't deserve to be paid a cent.

Apparently, an individual downloading a single file is like stealing a car. But a trillion-dollar corporation stealing every car is just good business.

@ajsadauskas I never used Napster. I found out Google’s own YouTube was giving me free music. While searching for why my hard drive space was being used up so quickly ( remember pre-terabyte drives… pre-Gb?) In my Windows system cache folders were massive files. Always after I had listened to YouTube. Google was basically storing every song I listened to on my own hard drive. Google was just lazy. Even MySpace had a js routine called cache-buster. Thanks Google.

Hey #lawfedi friends, every day a new person in #law or #legal adjacent fields joints the #fediverse and isn't aware of Lawstodon - the legal community directory for #Mastodon (and eventually the fediverse more broadly).

Feel free to add yourself, claim your profile, etc. I have been using it when I send recommendations for folks looking for practitioners in specific practice areas and it works a treat!

And, it just happens to look straight out of 2002. Isn't that neat?
