The "nine dashes" map is so abstract that it took a whole lot of wild imagination on the part of Vietnamese censors to see it at all. I actually suspect that someone on the censorship board just doesn't like Barbie, and made up the map idea as an excuse.
But it's no great surprise that the most hated man in the Senate amplified the nonsense.
