@stina_marie@bookstodon@horrorbooks@horror Aaahhh, what a brilliant list! Hailey Piper, Paul Tremblay, Stephen Graham Jones and so many more! Can't wait! :ablobcatbongo:
Today I worked on some art for a bit, read a fantastic book of eldritch horror, & now we're going to visit a haunted house via ROSE RED which I haven't watched since it originally aired. All in all, a wonderful day filled w my favorite things.
Hope you all read, watched, or made something spooky! 👻
Guess I should bust out my Diary of Ellen Rimbauer tonight.
@horror This was sillier than I remembered but the premise is still super fun. For every bad bit of acting & cringe-y dialogue, there are Melanie Lynskey, Nancy Travis, & Julian Sands totally invested & bringing it.
P.S. God, I miss Julian Sands. His charisma is amazing; he should've been a top leading man.
Five stars: Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher (2023) is a novella retelling of Sleeping Beauty. The story was inspired in the process of writing a different retelling, namely, Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible (2016), written under the actual name, Ursula Vernon
In my study of #film#history to understand the Mexploitation #horror#genre I found a lot of interesting and disturbing information in the #book "Mexploitation Cinema"
These films have a contradictory world view where your identity is under attack by foreigners but you must also delete your identity because its obsolete to be more like foreigners. A theme very similar to Italian futurists and #fascism who wanted the past forgotten and rewritten (1/2)
It explains further that American or European audiences wouldn't see mexploitation #movies for what they are really saying and think the monsters are just jokes instead of what they represent.
So anyone who tries to apply the techniques of these classic #movies needs to do it very carefully to not alienate the audience but also fall into the same trap old film makers did. (2/2)
@awenspark@bookstodon Tender is the Flesh was a book that absolutely wrecked my mental well-being for a week or two, but also I went out of my way to recommend to others after reading.
Loved to be horrified by it. Still think about that experience years later.
Posed this question over at the Sky place but I'll do it here, too, because I'm curious & want replies!
So, hopefully, since you're [#horror people] we're all familiar w Leland Gaunt, the Needful Things villain that can find something to tempt most people... I'm pondering, cuz I'm hard pressed to think of something I'd be vulnerable/susceptible to. Probably a 1st edition of a rare book. Or perfect health.
I hate this song with the fiery passion of a million suns and this is the first and only thing that has made me consider it in a new and exciting way. I still despise it, but I will now supplant this reality atop it whenever I hear that cursed song.
@groovemd@horror I apologize, and agree. It was unkind of me to just unleash it upon the world like that, but I felt compelled to, as it immediately got stuck in my head 😂
