Five stars: Chickenology: The Ultimate Encyclopedia by Barbara Sandri et al. (2021) at only eighty pages and heavily illustrated, is however, one of the most informative and entertaining books about chickens I've ever read.
A mermaid, a firebird, and a witch become entangled with the mysterious and powerful Witch Queen, who may hold the key to each of their past in this epic middle grade fantasy by debut author Vivian Zhou.
Five stars: DeadEndia: The Watcher's Test by Hamish Steele (2018) is the first half of a duology about demons, angels, and an amusement park. DeadEndia was a pilot, then a webcomic, then a graphic novel, and a brief series on Netflix (as Dead End: Paranormal Park). Each version is different but they share some key similarities: Norma, Barney, Pugsley, and Courtney.
Huda F Cares? by Huda Fahmy: 4* for this this #MiddleGrade#GraphicNovel that explores what it's like to be a practicing Muslim in the United States from a young teenage girl's perspective.
Five stars: Sunshine by Jarrett J. Krosoczka (2023) is the follow up to Hey, Kiddo (2020). This one covers a week in September where Jarrett volunteered at Camp Sunshine, a camp for children with cancer, and their families.
This graphic novel is a pure marvel ! From the perfect adaptation of Richard Adams' classic by James Sturm to the incredible art by Joe Sutphin, it is a very beautiful book ! I absolutely love the illustrations and all the details showing the epic journey of a group of rabbits in a search of home. It is absolutely mind blowing !
Five stars: Teen Titans: Robin by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo (Illustrator) (2023) is the fourth graphic novel in the series. Dick Grayson has caught up with Damian and the others as they hide out and train on an island in Georgia.
📚 Just finished reading: Run: Book One by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell, L. Fury, Afua Richardson (2021)
Run: Book One continues the comics biography of civil rights leader John Lewis. Set in the wake of the signing of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, the memoir focuses on differing opinions within the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and how Lewis struggled with his fellow protestors.
@bookstodon My #review of Daráhug #2: Nagmamahal, Daisy (Love, Daisy) by Kael Molo is now live! Molo delivers again on the spookiness - and this time with added background music, which enhances the spookiness in a VERY good way.
@bookstodon My #review of Daráhug #1: Ang Mananabang ng Sta. Maria (The Midwife of Sta. Maria) by Kael Molo is now live! A wonderfully spooky work of #Filipino#folkhorror. Molo’s artwork sets the tone very well, and the pacing is just fast enough to let the horror REALLY sink in.
@bookstodon I just read and thoroughly enjoyed the graphic novel SOLID STATE, by Jonathan Coulton, Matt Fraction, and Albert Monteys.
My full review:
I loved every panel of this comic which satirizes many things: the invasiveness of data mining and of the surveillance state, the absurdity of rigidly enforced conformity, the dangers of both AI and megalomaniacal overreach, and the suppression of individuality and imagination. It's clever, funny, and well-done. It is also a team effort with many contributors.
This sings to my spirit, which every day tells me that I don't have to be like everyone else. I mean, cheese and beans, this was fun! #GraphicNovel#books#BooksWorthReading
I'm reading 'The Killer', the complete graphic novel series. I'm a fourth into the book and pleasantly surprised. I feared this might be just some simplistic take on a murderous person's life—as with 'American Psycho'—but this book has a few things going for it, especially during some of the protagonist anti-hero's inner discussions. At times, philosophical. Other times, nearly depressed. The book is quite carefully written.
I never had the opportunity to read The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series, so I was quite excited to discover this graphic novel adaptation of the first novel. The story was so intriguing and interesting, I really enjoyed it ! I was really impressed by the depth of the storyline, as well as the use of worldwide mythologies.
📖August Book Wrap-Up 📖
I think august was the month where I read longer books, but thankfully, not one of them disappointed! Even though August greeted me with thicker books, I still managed to find time to read exciting manga and picture books.
@LauraKBuzz@bookstodon
Three Feathers is a powerful graphic novel about restorative justice and traditional native ways. I loved the simple, but powerful message , as well as the transformative growth of the characters.
