@stux This is the way. I think people are overreacting about threads, ActivityPub is an open protocol, no one owns the network and anyone can join. You don't want to interact with them? Join an instance that is not federated with them or block the domain, the protocol allows you to. Let people enjoy things, many will love to follow their friends or favorite creators without having to go to threads.net directly or any other centralize service, and this open the possibility to even follow an account through #RSS on threads more easily. The truth is, people don't care about centralization, ads, algorithms, they love them.
We are less than 1% of meta user base, it is not like they are hungry for a few millions of user in the fediverse as fedi users are making it seems to be, when they have billions across their services, and #threads alone have more than the whole #fediverse in a couple of months.
If they later decide to eliminate #ActivityPub from their services, the fediverse will remain the same as it is right now, used for people who are considered techie.
Basically the title. I’ve been thinking of checking out Mastodon, and I’d like to get opinions on which instances are great. I’m mostly just looking for something like Beehaw. That is to say, a chill and friendly place that’s at least decently active....
Before starting my own personal one, I used ones run by @Stux, mstdn.social and masto.ai. He has another one that’s based around coffee lovers, too: mastodon.coffee. They’re pretty laid back servers!
@migmit Probably right, just be direct with the argument. Her diary is appropriate for children her age and older. The issue is simply those who are against it being read by kids don't want to talk to their kids about it when questions come up. (Aside from the fringe deniers who don't think anything happened, of course). Parenting is tough sometimes, and it's okay to admit you don't have all the answers. Kids will appreciate honesty and trust your more if you just talk to them like people.
Many people still don't like the fact that Pluto is now classified as a dwaft-planet instead of a 'full' planet but it makes sense, otherwise we would have a lot more 'planets' in our solar system
Here are some objects in the Kuiper Belt, the region where Pluto is and as you see many of them are as 'large' as Pluto itself
@jonas_trostle An atmosphere in the definition introduces more complexity and issues. What kind of atmosphere, and how much? What if it could have an atmosphere if it was warmed enough, but is too cold due to distance? Io has an atmosphere and "rain" sometimes when it gets warm enough, then it all falls out when cold. Other bodies out there probably do or could to. Would a super-Earth that has no atmosphere not qualify?
What they could have done is better define the #3 of "clearing the neighborhood". The meaning of the definition is actually related to #2, being gravitationally sufficient in a different manner. "Gravitationally dominant in its area" might have worked. If Pluto was placed in the asteroid belt it would still fling out some rocks as they get near, but it would never be a dominant body, just as Ceres can't. It's not quite massive enough.
Geddit seems to have trouble showing OpenGraph images on new posts. These can be YouTube thumbnails, previews of the blog posts, etc. Many other instances seem to pick preview images on the fly....
I’m kind of new to lemmmy and I could find the answer anywhere but it seems my geddit.social all feed is old. It stays with posts ab 2-4 days old. At one point the top post was like 2 weeks old. While Lemmy.worlds all feed is updating way faster. Why is this? If I want faster feed should I switch? Thanks
Or - now this is a shot in the dark - we get stux’s attention and he responds before we tell other users to move instances. You know, just a thought, since he’s the guy who deals with site issues, talking to the person who can do something about it is usually a good idea.
Now that we have clients like geddit that don’t use the api, might a logical next step be to try to create a lemmy instance and/or bot that mirrors posts from reddit to lemmy?...
I repeat: geddit.social (this instance) is not a client. Nor is this community about that. You are confused between two different things called “geddit”, neither of which are alike. We have nothing to do with them.
This website - geddit.social - has nothing to do with the other - unfortunately named - reddit client for Android, nor are we affiliated with reddit in any way, nor do we code anything that accesses reddit. I promise, we aren’t lying to you. You are confusing two different things based on a similar name. You can go ahead and argue the point with me but your suggestions are not going to reach their intended audience & you’ll be wasting your time.
Here’s the difference:
That app, also named geddit, has a github page, which you’ve mentioned. Did you look at their about section? It’s on the right side of the page. Humour me and go look. Did you notice the website that is listed there? You might want to open it and check…because this isn’t it. The two couldn’t be more different visually. This website has dark mode on default. That website has a blindingly white background. The difference is extremely striking.
This website (geddit.social) is a Lemmy instance owned by stux (you may have heard of the cat who runs mstdn.social, masto.ai, mastodon.coffee, among other fun services), which is an open-source alternative to reddit, linked to other services such as Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc in something called the Fediverse, which you appear to be familiar with since you’re posting from another Lemmy instance (lemmy.sdf.org). In fact, if you actually go to our website, geddit.social (humour me and go there, I’ll wait), there are links at the bottom of every page that explain this is a Lemmy instance, just like the one you are using to post here.
Once again, that app and this website (geddit.social) are completely different entities (one accesses reddit, the other does not) and only share a similar name. We aren’t an app or a client, let alone do we have anything to do with reddit. This is a website. Not an app. People use Lemmy apps to access this instance. Lemmy is a Fediverse server software that other apps access. I couldn’t make the distinction any clearer. The name for this instance was chosen when we had no idea anything similarly named existed. It is just an unfortunate coincidence.
You are posting in !geddit - which is a community (on the geddit.social instance) about the instance itself (where we post news all our users should know). Nothing to do with anything that may or may not share a similar name. This is a completely different entity.
Once again, no, this website is NOT a client for reddit. In any conceivable sense. Nor do we have such a thing here.
I wanted to stay with World. But they are literally constantly having severe problems (errors, voting, comments). Gave them many chances. I’m sorry World, but I probably would abandon Lemmy if I had to stay, it’s just not an enjoyable experience.
Maybe it’s not even possible to keep a large (targeted) instance working with current limitations and tools? Hope they figure it out. I’m rooming with Stux at Geddit, he’s cool. So many cats…
Thanks for resolving this, Stux, you’re a legend! :)
With the changes to Voyager, is vger.app now the best way to use it with geddit.social? My understanding is that the app now connects directly to servers without the Voyager servers in the middle.
I originally chose to make my account on lemmy.world since all the content seemed to come from there. But I’ve since learned that I can fill my feed with stuff from any instance so it feels like it doesn’t actually matter if I’m on lemmy.world or not. At the same time, Lemmy.world seems to be frequently under attack so...
I chose my instance because of the admin (Stux). Basically, I knew that I could trust that it would be well run and have great moderation standards. It’s a small server for now and pretty sleepy. Most of my subscriptions are from lemmy.world and a few other larger servers but it doesn’t matter. I guess “local” might be less useful but that doesn’t bother me. I can say that, over the two weeks I’ve been here, I haven’t experienced any sort of performance issues or downtime.
The one case where I could see it being important is creating new communities – it’s probably more likely to have one take off on a larger server.
Joining the fediverse can be a daunting proposition, and it is understandable that many end up on larger more centralised servers that are easier to find. I have also had some bad experience with smaller servers also. The first one I arrived on was very quiet, almost inactive, and I should have taken that as a warning sign....
Since the abuser is no longer there, and there is no problems with abusive behaviour or rules from that instance, continued defederation seems a bit strong, especially when there are far worse instances everyone is still federated with (stux, gargamel, and all the meta 'wait and see' sell outs etc). At this point it seems that it is just a grudge and bad blood between instance admins, and it is users that suffer the consequences.
Rumors are tearing this place apart out here about secret deals with #Meta. The latest is that Meta has held #NDA meetings with some of you and they will federate with large instances under contracts providing financial support (1) (2).
This is a time for leadership, not silence. Please, what's going on?
@ophiocephalic They are not, they did not start rumours. Users did by throwing a damn tantrum based on rumours. I love how you ignored the comments about death threats. It's people like you that are part of the problem. Death threats are worse than some people potentially meeting with Meta

The new system to replace Reddit coins and awards is here. You got out at the right time. (www.reddit.com)
Read all about it at the above link. There’s way too much to process here. This is going to be wild.
