catacomb, in ELI5: What's the differences between Lemmy and kbin?

ELI5? McDonald’s and Burger King. One has a Big Mac, the other a Whopper. One has red and yellow, the other red and blue. Either way, you’re getting a burger.

Oh, they’re also right next to each other so you can wave to the people in Burger King from McDonald’s and vice versa. Now everyone is enjoying burgers together.

gabuwu, in Has anyone tried squabbles.io yet? It might be my favorite of the Reddit alternatives so far!

I liked it briefly when I logged in but as someone on reddit pointed out, the owner encouraged others to astroturf bringing new users to the site which feels kinda icky given the way other users have also bashed lemmy alongside it.

Dave_r, in The US Is Openly Stockpiling Dirt on All Its Citizens

If I read it right: the government is paying for commercial (phone) location data. There are 3 issues:

  • creepy: the government shouldn’t have this
  • costly: they are buying it with our tax dollars
  • comprehensive (?): They are getting everything (money can buy)?

If the government were to require this (like via a search warrant) rather than pay for it it would go through a mountain of legal oversight. It seems like the interpretation is: commercially available = publically available.

I guess what I would want to know next is: who gets access to this?

Retirix_YT, in iPhone app for browsing Lemmy?

I’m using Mlem through TestFlight. Works pretty well, crashes sometimes but I’m not sure that’s not just because I’m on IOS 17 dev beta.

scrubbles, in Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Week 1

Reddit has been going through some issues for many on Monday, with the outage happening the same day as thousands of subreddits going dark to protest the site’s new API pricing terms.

According to Reddit, the blackout is responsible for the problems. “A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt tells The Verge.

Honestly, mobile browing (even using old.reddit) has been garbage for years because they detect your mobile OS and constantly try to push their app on you. Click on link, do you want to open in mobile app? let me open the playstore for you. And then you also get limited comments. To see more comments open in mobile app… You could do a case study in how to alienate your customers into leaving your platform on just mobile browsing reddit.

As if it wasn’t bad enough to ask if I want to use the default mobile app every time I go to a Reddit page on mobile. 😕

rowinofwin, in Data Shows Most Switch Owners Are Women, Gamers React Poorly

I am glad this trend is becoming better understood. A more diverse audience means more diverse stories being told, and while another MCU or Street Fighter is a perfectly good game to release a game targeting that more diverse audience will give more options for me. I typically play games like Risk of Rain, Skyrim, Creeper World, and so on, but I have also lost many hours to Viva Piñata, so I would love to see some more diversity in the games on offer.

Fuel on the flames huh? Got to love their tactical timing with this. Let’s piss everyone off in every possible way?

It’s almost like Elon bought Reddit as well as Twitter the way this is going.

So he’s run out of engineers that know how to maintain the block feature?

My eyes are screaming just looking at the new.reddit UI.

Sometimes it's good to be reminded what an abomination it actually is.

The more they push their shitty mobile app, the more people won’t use it.

duncesplayed, in Reddit experimenting with blocking mobile browsers

I hate when people use passive voice in these things. It’s such a slimy way to try and avoid responsibility.

“We have blocked you from using a mobile browser.” is the active voice. It includes a subject (“we”) and a verb (“blocked”). It says that someone made a decision, executed that decision, and is responsible.

"It looks like … “, " … is currently unavailable” is so fucking weaselly and irresponsible. You are 100% a complete piece of shit if you ever say something like that. You are not responsible enough to handle a Wendy’s drive-through order, let alone a large organization.
