Raptors have a very poor sense of smell, with the exception of the turkey vulture. Many can only smell what is already in their mouth, and some not really even then. That allows these birds, like our Great Horned Owl depicted here, to chow down on things others pass by, like skunks....

I was just thinking I didn’t have any neat owl facts lately, and saw this cross-posted on the Tailwinds site. The hole is the “glottis” and it keeps things from getting in their windpipe....

The Morepork is the only living native owl species of New Zealand. This bird had over 20 names, but many come from the sounds that it makes. Some biologists have the Boobook split off as a separate species, but that’s a recent change....
