Watched a video on the new Toyota Camry and one of my favorite examples of car brain rot are the folks who still cling to cylinder count as the be-all-end-all.

They dropped the V6 option and now they're all hybrids.

Nevermind that it's making the same power as a V6 Camry from 20 years ago while also getting probably double the fuel economy, the crowd says "oh noooo 4 is less than 6"

Literally all they consider is the number of splodey holes. It's so tiring.

giantfuzzyelephant,

@TechConnectify youve not driven much have you

@giantfuzzyelephant no, I've driven plenty of times and plenty of things. From diesel V8 trucks to hybrids and EVs to silly JDM cars with a buzzy little turbocharged four-banger.

I'm the kind of nerd who likes to appreciate the nuances between these cars, but who also realizes most people don't give a shit AND that even those who do are fixating on minutia that actually matters at best 1% of the time.

@TechConnectify you're missing the point, car needs to go 'WROOM WROOM', not 'wroom wroom', and preferably act as a vibrator. Not everyone appreciates [a calm, slow and repetitive tone]

@Joris heh, to be honest the engine sound of that truck was a blast. A Detroit 6.2 diesel under the hood which sounded like a school bus. Extremely wheezy and underpowered (to the point the original owner slapped on an aftermarket turbo!) but it was a fun challenge to wake it up on a cold day and hear/see/smell it roar to life.

But it was also a terrible piece of junk! Weird how we can have two thoughts in our head at the same time.

@TechConnectify i actually drive one of those v6's from 1999 (actively trying to get a more recent car with a smaller engine)... aside from perhaps greater torque compared to a straight 4, i don't really see why someone would want one.

the 2014 model, even the 4 cylinder gets almost the same horsepower despite being a much smaller engine and probably 5-6L/100 more fuel efficient.

@maboroshi1994

@TechConnectify torque beats horsepower in most driving.

@TechConnectify
I saw a Consumer Reports car review once and there was a woman who complained the pedals were too far away. That blew my mind.

I'm tempted to start a car review YouTube channel where I test cars in early morning or night in winter and rain. The 70° sunny California weather is just so unrelatable.

@MisterMadge @TechConnectify Was the woman short? Ergonomics could be legit. They're also quite dependent on the person so YMMV by a lot.

I find my knee hits the steering column of my corolla despite the seat being as far back as it goes. People taller than me would probably find the car increasingly unusable due to the pedals being, effectively, too close.

I don't know what to do with this other than just be like... okay bud.

Wait 'til they get a load of one of them no cylinder cars and how fast they go.

And if they really wanna see a big engine, they should try a train!*

*I know how uncommon diesel locos are in your part of the world, no need to blurt that out now

@TechConnectify We just need to pivot from "electric motor" to "electric engine", and then shorten to "engine", and speciy the power in hp instead of kW. Nobody said that all engines are ICEs.

bluGill,
@bluGill@kbin.social avatar

@klausman

@TechConnectify an.engine has power applied in a reciprocating motion, and needs a.crankshaft to get rotary motion. A motor has power applied directly in a rotary motion. Electric engines have been made but they are clearly worse than motors. Likewise the wankle 'engine' (used in Mazda's RX7) is not an engine but a.gas motor.

The above definition isn't the most common ,but it exists.
