The presence of Indians, from India, in Fediverse is insignificant as on today. Most of us are happy with X and social media tools from Meta. Even the number of posts from existing users, in India, is very low though many of them seem to be active in the above mentioned social media sites.

What can be done to improve the situation? There are no carrots here.

@srijit @mastodonindians In my opinion

  1. There is no Mastodon India server
  2. Its extremely difficult to find other Indian people (who are active)
  3. There are no reputed people/companies/news outlets directly on Mastodon
  4. People here don't engage on common topics, even news articles because the interests are spread too broadly and thinly

The only reason I was able to find this topic and you is because I started scrolling , and this too is extremely cluttered by News bots

@ChunkieRamos @srijit @mastodonindians agree. I used to follow the Mast India Tag until it started being full of bot posts

Same. I've kept the hashtag but I have muted most of the news bots. There is one Indian server but it seems to be made entirely of news bots.

Scroll.in used to be here but their account has been dormant for a while.

@ChunkieRamos @srijit @mastodonindians The Bots include Times Of India, Hindustan Times. Also see @mastodonindians and @susubh does a reasonable job Also @nitin @SohanDsouza

@srijit @mastodonindians Network effects are too strong imo. It might happen if enough Indian orgs started a move (media mainly).

@nemo @srijit @mastodonindians This year I used Mastodon a lot and in fact for few months didn’t touch Twitter.

But whenever natural calamity strikes (earthquake in North India), there is zero info here, while X has up to date information.

Can that be changed?

I like the idea behind the news bots, but my feed gets extremely cluttered with them that it is difficult to find actual people's posts.

@srijit

It's depressing. I clicked through & found overwhelming number of toots focused on gossip & entertainment.

For a country with the largest population on earth, I saw little to no engagement on international affairs, not even about regional affairs ( ), much less about and the world.

I switched from #X 6 months ago and never looked back 🙂

@srijit @mastodonindians i don’t think there’s a silver bullet. from my failed experience in trying to move friends and family across,

  1. the inertia to stay on the traditional platforms is too high. it’s too much of a hassle to move.
  2. they’ve already built their follower base on other platforms. the dopamine hit of regular engagement is more readily available there.

these are isolated observations, though. one can’t say how significant these factors truly are.

@kshah To me it feels heavily influenced by politics. I get the impression Mastodon became heavily associated with liberal thought that is less and less tolerated in India right now. So to start using Mastodon isn't just a technical decision, but a declaration of a political position people feel unsafe to associate themselves with.

Perhaps looking to a different fediverse platform that is interoperable but doesn't have that name recognition will help.

@tokyo_0 @kshah @srijit @mastodonindians I don’t think it’s the politics. Social proof and network effects are especially strong in India.

Not just India. As Tyler Cowen says Twitter is where all actions are reported (and happening).

Not Indian but an OCI and lived in Delhi for five years: I think inertia and networks are real. During the WhatsApp controversies a couple of years ago, really wanted my families Indian and American to move to Signal. Just could not do it. They had established networks already and did not want to loose them.

I wonder if more Indian instances could help? Especially some in local languages. I don’t think there are that many. You really have to dig. But a few well-run, friendly places might help. While I am on a general instance, I love the idea of regional ones or even ones for cities. Could give a good entry point.

Lastly, I don’t think Mastodons politics is a factor.

@kshah @srijit @mastodonindians I was successful moving my friend from WhatsApp to some open source application, I forced them, if they wanted to chat, they had to use it bc I don't and won't use WhatsApp or any other proprietary social media. btw i became associated with that app for them. i don't think I will be able to force them to use some other "microblogging" platform
