Another vote for Midori and Rhodia. I’m looking for the spiral version of the Midori, in the meantime my daily driver is a sidebound Rhodia spiral. It just works, any ink, any pen.
Where did you buy it, and what kind of ink are you using? Metropolitans are really reliable, so it’s be very surprised to see a dud unless it wasn’t a real Metropolitan or the ink was India ink or iron gall ink. There are Lamy Safari fakes and other similar pens sold on Amazon. I’ve had better luck buying at pen shows and from trusted retailers.
I did buy it on Amazon, but it was shipped and sold by them so I trusted that it was legit. The ink cartridge was included with the pen. After fussing with it some more and reading all the responses here I’ve decided to return it for a refund. Guess this is a lesson to stick with more trusted retailers, I’ve been lucky to never receive an Amazon fake but I guess there’s a first time for everything.
The problem with Amazon is that they sometimes just combine all of a single item, say the pilot metropolitan, from all sellers, including Amazon, together in one place in the warehouse. If some sellers send fakes and others genuine product, when you order, you can get a dud from a reputable seller and genuine product from the counterfeit seller.
I’ve heard both good and bad. From what I’ve gathered quality control is still an issue for Majohn pens. So if you get a good one, they’re actually pretty good, but it’s a dice roll as to weather you will or not.
Thank you for voting, all! In the results, x = 1 vote, if someone voted for two different ones I took their first choice/the one they were leaning towards.
Looks lovely! I enjoyed looking at the writing sample. Your ink really helps show off the line variation. I like how the loops in your b, h, and l letters look!
Pilot Iroshizuku Syo-Ro - it is basically a teal. I received it as a gift sample when buying from a reputable seller (arlepo) and it looks and behaves totally average for me. i’ve never owned any Pilot Iroshizuku or other premium series like Pelikan Edelstein and was super hyped about it. But eventually my expectations were not met. Honestly.
Could you post back when you actually have to clean/flush it? I’m particularly interested in how hard or how much time it takes to clean a piston filler.
I have two 699s and both are among my favorite Chinese pens. No leaking… You may have gotten a defective pen, unfortunately. Are you storing it with the blind cap screwed closed the whole way? If the blind cap is fully closed, the pen shouldn’t be leaking at all…
The burping can happen with vac fillers as your hand’s warmth causes air in the barrel to expand, pushing out the ink. Filling the pen up more fully may help - less air to expand. Are you writing with the blind cap open? This may help as there won’t be a sealed off barrel in which the air can expand.
That’s interesting that the hand warmth can cause burping when the blind cap is closed, I had thought that closing the cap would fully seal the ink reservoir from the nib.
Hmm right - you would think that the shut off valve should keep any expanding air out of the nib. between that and the leaking, maybe you just have a defective pen with some issue in the sealing of the shut-off valve?
