They have an explanation in the link - they effectively don’t want you hosting images on lemm.ee, as it has the potential to scale out of control for server costs. Whether that’s reasonable or not idk, but I can see where they’re coming from. Even though my server doesn’t have an upload limit, I personally just post all my images to catbox.moe in the meantime until we get some more data on how Lemmy scales.
Depending on what you are using the web ui, or an app should parse the image from the link. You can try using squoosh.app and really shrink down your image without real quality loss.
Click ‘edit’ on your original post, then put your image’s URL into the “URL” space and save.
There’s actually no difference between using an external image host and uploading to lemm.ee in terms of end result - all image posts on Lemmy are technically just URLs that are filled out.
Sorry I just saw how you posted it - you posted the link to the image’s webpage but not the direct link to the image itself. You’ll need to right click the image and e.g. “Open image in new tab” or “Copy image location” or something so that you end up with a link that actually ends with your image file, like this:
Oh snap! Thanks again! I’m still trying to figure out this Federation-ness-izm stuff lol. I really want lemmy to take off (to a point, because fuck the mainstream runs everything), but it needs to get just a teensy bit more user friendly…
No worries. There’s always some small-dick-energy bitches wherever you go. I just try to remain positive, throw some shade, and block. Let them drown in their misery- my life is pretty good regardless of their shitty attitude!
Thanks for including the link because for some reason I couldn’t get to the direct image, it just kept loading the page again. Next time I’ll try catbox!
