some suggestions

  1. There should be a maximum cap of 500k users (maybe less) on all instances because:

    • The whole point of this website is decentralization. No single instance should become too big, and currently, Lemmy has more than 1500 users.
    • By limiting the number of users on each instance, it helps distribute the load and prevents overwhelming a single server. Additionally, it can also help reduce the cost associated with hosting a large number of users on a single server.
  2. We should get rid of the downvote and karma system because:

    • Downvotes discourage unpopular opinions.
    • and some people care about imagery internet point so they post low quality content.
    1. How about user level instance blocking rather than admin level instance blocking?

Also i am unable to choose between connect and liftoff what you guys using?

You are posting this on lemmy.world with your lemmy.world account. Perhaps you can start by migrating yourself to another instance?

Every instance has different resources (hardware, people, time). Some instances are able to support more users while some others are intended for small audiences.

I don’t know the architecture of Lemmy, but in many cases a server can be scaled for more users, by load balancing, distributed computing etc.

Agree with you about karma, but downvote might be necessary in order to keep spam/trolls/self-promotion etc away.

nekat_emanresu,
  1. I think this should be a cultural change and not a hard-coded one. I would like no more than a third of users on any instance for resistance to hacks and corruption etc.
  2. I agree. I’d like to see at minimum downvotes hidden for 1 hour on comments.
  3. I think they are adding that eventually if it’s not already implemented.

I wonder if it’s possible to have communities that are read only to outsider instances or fully private to be seen only by the host instance?

StringPotatoTheory,
  1. downvotes can be disabled by admins of the instance for the entire instance, so it’s optional and up to them. is there a karma system with lemmy (like showing how much total karma you have on your profile)? I know kbin has that
  2. user level instance blocking would be nice to have!
i_do_not_agree,

Yes lemmy has karma system also connect have user level instance blocking

There isn’t a Karma system per se, but summed point totals for your comments and posts are tracked by the ActivityPub back end out of necessity for how the protocol works (as far as I understand it).

Most Lemmy instances hide this value, but some apps accesses and shows it (such as Voyager). Kbin also displays it.
