chuckles in Classic Era Who fan at the idea that the modern-era Who sets “look like sets and set dressing”

Devi,

I think it's the campy CGI. I said the same with the ship in the last one. It looks cartoonish and I don't enjoy it. I'd rather have a small set that is built over a giant one like this.

ech,

I’m not sure I’d describe it as “too 2005”, but I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the new aesthetic. A part of Dr Who that I’ve always loved has been them making it work with what they had. Not to say they were getting by on scraps, particularly in the later seasons, but it was never the flashiness of special effects that drew me in. From running down eerily similar corridors throughout the series, to episodes contained to just one room, Dr Who’s best traits existed beside all of the effects they were able to afford, and the last few specials have felt kind of…“flat” for lack of a better word, while the post-production budget has clearly ballooned. I’m still excited for the next regeneration, but I’m a bit wary if the new season is going to be a lot like the specials have been. Maybe it’s just something I’ll get used to. Who knows.

dhork,

I saw that UNIT set and immediately thought “Disney’s turned UNIT into Stark Industries HQ”

benjiman,

Yep, I was thinking “there’s no way Disney will let them get away with this” before I remembered Disney was involved with making Doctor Who now. Guess it’s not unprecedented though, Marvel’s Helicarrier always reminded me of UNITs Valiant (though I’m sure the Helicarrier probably predates it in the comics).
