JohnnyEnzyme,

Welp, I started commenting on a side note, and decided to just throw it all into a separate post. It’s about how I view the rise and fall of modern Heathcliff. Cheers!

@glimse

SchoopDaWhoop,

Ok, I’ve seen plenty of those Heathcliff without Heathcliff posts. What’s all this about?

glimse,

There was/is a popular series called Garfield without Garfield that, unsurprisingly, removed the the cat from the comic. This made the other main character, Jon Arbuckle, look like he was depressed and going insane.

Heathcliff without Heathcliff attempts to capitalize on this phenomenon with a different comic series…but honestly every single one has fallen flat for me every single time. They mostly just look like normal comics.

Maybe I just don’t get it but in contrast to the Garfield series, nothing is ADDED when Heathcliff is removed. There vibe of the comic stays the same minus some context.

FauxPseudo,

Not entirely accurate. When you remove Garfield you get some existential vibes. I started removing Heathcliff from Heathcliff when I realized that he is completely unnecessary for “the joke” most of the time. When you say that these edits “look like normal comics” you are completely proving my point. If it reads like a normal comic without the “main character” even being there then it shows that he adds nothing to the situation. Now this isn’t always true but it’s true often enough. This comic is an example of that. The characters speaking is the same, the subject they are talking about is the same. Heathcliff brings nothing so it’s “just a normal comic” not a Heathcliff comic. Removing him doesn’t add anything but it also takes away nothing.

WhyIDie,

so relatable

Squids,

I think there might also be an element of “Heathcliff (the comic) just isn’t as recognisable and well known”? Like you see a Garfield without Garfield and you know what’s wrong, even if you’ve never actually seen that specific comic. Can’t really be said about these

Like maybe it’s because I’m not American, but whenever I see these titles I always have a moment of “what, wuthering Heights guy?”. Actually there’s an idea “Heathcliff but the wrong one”. We’ve replaced the cat with a very angry guy from Regency era Yorkshire.
