Is this really considered “classic rock”? Seems more like new wave to me. I guess that’s the problem with labels/categories.

I remember hearing this on some rock stations when it came out. They weren’t hung up about the specific genre and neither was I. It can be difficult to say what is and isn’t rock music because it is so broad.

Anyway, if that’s not good enough for you then new wave is also on Wikipedia’s list of rock genres:
