niktemadur, in There are 40 quintillion black holes in our Universe

A gaggle of singularities?
A swarm. A hive. A parliament.

No, no… a SCHOOL of singularities!

PhlubbaDubba,

a SUCC of singularities

kalkulat, in Something Mysterious Appears to Be Suppressing the Universe's Growth, Scientists Say

It just noticed human beings, and is trying to figure out what is suppressing their growth.

LoraxEleven, in NASA Brings Back Actual Sample Of Asteroid But Can't Open The Lid

Kid I used to work with said:

“Hand me that torch. Can’t be seized-up if it’s dripping out in the floor.”

Pressurized airline fitting was just straight whoopin his fuckin ass…

I think he wore sunglasses in the shop so he could never see the lightyear-wide greenhorn shitstain he left in his wake. Been three years and I still find one of his fuckups every now and again. His tech manual for every vehicle was the top two or three hits on SploogeToob…

He’d definitely have that lid, the container it’s in and everything else in the lab turned to pure watery shit by now… “What do ya mean it’s contaminated? I used a thousand dollar MATCO grinder!!!”

Oddly enough, I miss that little motherfucker every now and again. He was definitely entertaining.

Yeah, you know he drove a fuckin Miata. Convertible…

Deebster, in Neutron Star Collision Caught Forging Heavy Metals in a JWST First
@Deebster@beehaw.org avatar

This headline makes it sound like the star has been rumbled counterfeiting Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden CDs 🤘

gravitas_deficiency, in Neutron Star Collision Caught Forging Heavy Metals in a JWST First

Wow, that neutron star should be more careful. I’m pretty sure counterfeiting heavily metals is illegal

Ignacio, in Black holes could come in 'perfect pairs' in an ever expanding universe
@Ignacio@kbin.social avatar

Researchers from the University of Southampton, together with colleagues from the universities of Cambridge and Barcelona, have shown it's theoretically possible for black holes to exist in perfectly balanced pairs—held in equilibrium by a cosmological force—mimicking a single black hole.

Thanos would be very proud.

facelessbs, in NASA will reveal what OSIRIS-REx brought back from asteroid Bennu on Wednesday

I do not understand why this is a headline. it has to right?

xradeon,

Just because NASA has to release information doesn’t mean the normal person knows when they are going to do that. It’s nice to know when interesting information is going to come out.

facelessbs,

do they have a set time line on information gained to release?

RampageDon, in NASA will reveal what OSIRIS-REx brought back from asteroid Bennu on Wednesday

Dad?

kalkulat, in Astronomy Picture of the Day: 2 Oct 2023 - Red Sprites

Looks like a scene from “Day of the Triffids”.

can, in James Webb telescope makes 'JuMBO' discovery of planet-like objects in Orion

Jupiter Mass Binary Objects, or “JuMBOs” for short.

dingleberry, in Discovery Alert: The Planet that Shouldn't Be There - NASA Science

Planet 8 Ursae Minoris b orbits a star some 530 light-years away that is in its death throes. A swollen red giant, the star would have been expected to expand beyond the planet’s orbit before receding to its present (still giant) size. In other words, the star would have engulfed and ripped apart any planets orbiting closely around it. Yet the planet remains in a stable, nearly circular orbit.

1" means 1 arcsecond, not 1 inch, for the Americans. 1 arcsecond is 1/60th of an arcminute. 1 arc minute is 1/60th of degree. So the 1" scale shown represents 1/3600th of a degree. The object is measured at 1.54 arcseconds
