Why don't community metrics display accurately on Lemmy?

For example, when I'm logged in, subscriber counts and user interaction counts appear far, far lower on different communities than they do when I'm logged out.

Look at these screenshots of the same community. This one is with me logged in:

Why such a huge discrepancy?

  • numbers_online is currently a lemm.ee-specific bug, will be fixed soon!
  • subscribers only shows local subscribers, IMHO it's not super useful like this, maybe it can change in the future
  • Discrepancies in the active users/posts/comments come from flaky federation. This is most likely going to improve a lot as instances upgrade to 0.18.1, with more improvements coming in the future!
