I really want to know as well, I'm getting closer to cracking the code, but a LOT of it has to do with how you manage stress in your daily life.
I've been putting in lots of hours and lines of code, artwork, and writing in one of my recent projects, and the main reason I've been able to do that at all is that I not only do it when I'm the most relaxed, I also change up what I'm doing to keep things fresh.
Writing hitting a wall? Try drawing!
Can't draw worth shit because you lost your creative drive? Program something!
Can't program because you are giving yourself a migraine by calculating all that nonsense? Dunno, play Minecraft or Watch youtube!
Bored of the games? Try writing!
I've been basically rotating everything I do and that helps a whole lot with keeping stuff moving. It's better to just not focus on something for too long, only little bits at a time. And those bits all add up to the 1000's of hours.
I used to be very different.
As a kid, when Space Engineers came out, I played that shit so hard that I clocked 15,000 hours in no time. I would play during the day, after school, at night, during the summer, holidays, all the fucking time.
But the result? I burnt out on it so hard that even to this day I cannot fathom touching it again, and it's a game I love!
So take your time, be patient, and stay committed.
I get a lot of news from HackerNews, but that's not really world news as much as "internet news." (and even then, just one corner of the internet news.)
As for irl news, it's primarily on Twitter from some journalists who have political views related to mine (so enthusiastically anti-Trump). Also, you'd be surprised how much /r/vexillologycirclejerk kept up with the news cycle, and I hope /m/vcj does the same soon.
I originally tried Lemmy, but I couldn’t get past the constant refreshing on the ‘all’ page. I know they acknowledged it was a glitch they were working on, but it took too long for them to fix it before I found that kbin worked equally well for me.
Then, I learned about Lemmy having its beginnings tied to ‘Tankies’ - People who essentially support China/Russia. (There are better explanations out there.) I’m not sure the platform has moved far enough away from that yet.
Right now my priority is to leave Reddit. And if it can be accomplished by not going to Lemmy, that’s a plus. Hence, kbin.
But, as both grow and change in the coming months, I might change my mind again. They’re both still so young. It’s exciting to be witness to this time!
A lot of people mention the waiver, which...sure, there's some assumption of the risk for diving to the bottom of the ocean. But a waiver won't exclude you from gross incompetence and negligence.
If I ran an indoor trampoline park, I may have you sign a waiver before you can use it. This makes sense, as jumping on trampolines carries with it some inherit risk of physical injury. That's a risk you have to acknowledge before you can come in. However, if you got injured because the building caught on fire, and due to my negligence I've blocked all the fire exits with flammable material, that's a bit beyond the assumption of risk covered by the waiver. I would totally be liable for any damages that result.
Did the Titan implode due to the inherit risk of deep sea exploration? Or did it implode due to a dereliction of safety precautions? (It's that one)
The "home button" being hidden behind the hamburger menu and the fact that I can't collapse comment threads are my only 2 QoL issues, otherwise it all works great for a product that's only like 6 weeks old lol
There's just a polish to this site that Lemmy instances don't have
It would also be nice to have a "context" button on comments in your profile so you can quickly see your comment surrounded by the comments you were interacting with, like Reddit did. Right now I'm having to go back to the original thread and find my comment to see the sub-thread it was part of and remember what it was we were talking about.
Also having trouble seeing comment reply notifications from instances outside of kbin. They don't show up at all and I am unable to see if people are replying to them. Have to go back to the original thread again.
This is really the only fair I'm struggling with, wick access to the thread content before replying is important. I'm trying to avoid commenting on similar threads atm so I don't accidentally include something from a different thread
I haven't created a Lemmy account, and I probably won't. I chose Kbin primarily because it's written in PHP which gives me the best opportunity to contribute, since I know the language. Haven't done much of that yet, but I am watching development and it's very active. Lots of community involvement and people trying to help. Ernest is overwhelmed but steadily working on scaling up the entire operation (infrastructure, organization, processes, etc.) with help from some great people.
My vote is for Iceland too! If you fly their airline, you get to stay there without paying the cost of airfare any time you are flying between Europe & the USA, by turning your layover into a "stopover." It's 100% worth taking advantage of! Plus, shorter plane flights on either end :)
Definitely. It's beautiful. The people are so kind. Food is amazing. So much to see and experience. Great for family vacations. Don't believe the movie hype; the seedy stuff is only in the red light districts of a few cities.
Lemmy needs just one click on an image and it enlarges the image just below the post. Kbin requires 3 clicks to see an enlarged image. Maybe this is a settings issue, and I am all ears on how to make kbin work like lemmy. But, for me, as of now, lemmy wins with this feature.
Prefer Kbin, I feel the interface is cleaner and more true to the Fediverse. My complaints are A) It's really hard to just look at a list of your magazines and B) why is the reply box at the bottom of the page?
Lemmy. Idk, I tried it first, enjoyed it. I made a kbin account to test it out too and found a few features I preferred less there. I also remember the name lemmy easier than kbin.
