2d, to apple in Apple no longer requires a $99 account to access developer betas of iOS, MacOS, and other software
@2d@kbin.social avatar

As usual, I said I wasn’t going to run the beta this year, and usual, something came up to change my mind. This year, it was free developer betas.

Overall I kind of dislike iOS 17, but I’m enjoying the significantly improved autocorrect.

@2d

@wave_walnut what is it you dislike? The release seems kind of like the Leopard -> Snow Leopard release. Hopefully this means a lot of bugs get fixed

There’s a lot of really dumb small changes to things that feel like it’s just change for the sake of it. I’m running a beta- I really don’t hate change, I quite enjoy it when it’s useful. Some of these changes I understand the reasoning behind, like the new call screen, but others seem to make no sense, like the iMessage photos, camera, etc buttons being behind a plus button instead of directly on your screen. Now it’s four taps to send a photo instead of three.

Great news! Now if only they’d let people develop iOS apps using a windows or Linux machine.

@PeutMieuxFaire@kbin.social avatar

Thanks, this looks like a very nice backup tool, especially for non-technical users. I can think about several people in my family who could benefit from it but I first need to convince them about the importance of making backups.
On the personal side, if I ever get fed up with borg and command lien I might give it a try :)

borkcorkedforks, to programming in If you use AI-generated code, what's your liability exposure?

It's generally the company actually selling the product, if anyone is actually liable at all. It would be rare for any developer to be held liable unless someone was actually malicious.

The use of generated code doesn't really change anything if someone is going to claim ownership and the liability generally isn't related to code anyway.

style99, to tech in Twitter seeing 'record user engagement'? The data tells a different story
@style99@kbin.social avatar

Twitter turning into a paradise for neo-Nazis, racists, misogynists and murderous terrorists does tend to make people consider alternatives.

CIWS-30,

Yep, so true. Even before it wasn't such a great place. It encouraged anger and fights, doomscrolling, and negativity even before Musk took over. I was seriously considering leaving it for good before he bought it. He just made a bad thing worse, honestly. It was already on a downward trend. Even their internal research had shown that all of their top tweeters who had the most positive engagement had already gone away.

niktemadur,
@niktemadur@kbin.social avatar

It wouldn't surprise me if the constant loud and vulgar presence of the orange shithead and the hashtag-maga shitheads, splashing their shit all over the place, was the main catalyst to dishearten and drive away many of those who wanted to make Twitter a positive experience.

A company head by Elon Musk lying about something? I'm shocked. Next we will find out Zuckerberg is dishonest too.

Yeah, Oracle trying to brand itself as “the good guy” is certainly an odd turn of events. I don’t trust them, but I guess we’ll see what they end up doing.

bemenaker,

What a strange time to see Oracle as the champion of free and open instead of the greedy closed overlord.

StarServal,
@StarServal@kbin.social avatar

It’s probably self-serving somehow. Getting the door slammed close in their faces rather than them doing the slamming.

Atiran, (edited ) to technology in Oracle takes on Red Hat in Linux code fight

Companies have been gorging themselves at the free buffet of open source software for a long time. But now the party is ending and many things that used to be free are no longer free for enterprise use.

Yes, you are right. And I proofread it and still missed it.

djvdq, to tech in Is AI the 'biggest bubble of all time'? Stability AI CEO thinks so

Emad looks like thinks everything about it. One day he says that we're doomed because of AI, another that there won't be more developers in 5 years because of AI and now that it's a bubble.

peter, to tech in Is AI the 'biggest bubble of all time'? Stability AI CEO thinks so
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

It definitely is a bubble. Look at how many companies are integrating GPT into products that have no business having AI. Look at how much openAI is subsidising the cost of GPT 3.5. Reality will set in and all these companies will be left with huge AI bills for features designed to impress investors, not users.
