Never played Half-Life Uplink. Pretty good bonus content.

Oof

I think my favorite part is how they’ve brought back software rendering, both by allowing it on linux and by giving the option to turn off texture filtering on opengl. That plus making the main menu look like the original release brings me right back to how I first played Half-Life!

How to tell someone they’re old in as painful and indirect manner as possible.

So is Half-life: source now the old one or is Half-life the old version? Or did they revamp both? It is a bit unclear in my library.

@vhj@lemmy.world avatar

The one just named “Half Life” is the definitive version now, the one that got the big update yesterday.

Source is the same messy version as it was before and they haven’t touched it. Though it will still be in our libraries for legacy versions.

Valve themselves recommend you ignore Source exists now.

JokeDeity,

IMO Black Mesa is now the definitive version.

slaacaa,

What is their reason for abandoning the source version? I would assume it looks better, and it would be easier to fit for today’s gaming needs

vhj,
@vhj@lemmy.world avatar

If you ask me, the Source version didn’t include any QoL improvements or anything that might make the game more modern feeling.

The “upgrades” are mostly new textures and effects that bugged out half the time. Plus all the gameplay bugs that it introduced.

Even before the update most people were recommending the OG above the Source version, so it makes sense that they would update that one.

There is a nice easter egg on the page, it has to do with the crowbar at the bottom!

MeatsOfRage,

Hah fun

grue,

Nice, I just

spoilergot the achievement.

olosta, to gaming in Half-Life 25 Anniversary Update

Relaunched it to replay the demo : “uplink”, it really lived up to my memory. A self contained half hour of half life fun, with an original map that show off diverse game mechanics. This was really a great demo back in the day.

Rokin, to gaming in Half-Life 25 Anniversary Update

25 years, still getting updates!

grue,

Anything to avoid making Half Life 3, I guess.

JokeDeity,

Why do people still insist Alyx isn’t 3? It’s clearly 3, it’s the continuation of the story.

Alyx is an interquel, if we're going to say that's a real word, and it released on a platform most of the audience just won't ever have. Also, it doesn't so much continue the story as it does promise to continue the story. They admit that they've got work to do.

just play “black mesa” to enjoy HL1 in HL2 graphics

kurcatovium,

Or play both and pick your favourite.

apprehensively_human,

Black Mesa is a good game with nice graphics, but it does not scratch that nostalgia itch the same way.

Was anyone else floored that Half-Life came out 25 years ago? I mean, of course I can do the math, but it hit me hard how long ago that was.

I remember reading a preview article in PC Gamer about the revolutionary AI in the game, how enemies would follow you if they could hear you and set up ambushes.

Then the first time I played it, having the story told right in the game with characters doing actions that you can look around and see and interact with … It was clear to everyone at the time that this was the future of storytelling in first-person games.

I’m definitely going to need to try this on my Deck when it arrives and see if the gameplay holds up.

They’ve been hush-hush about this for months on their Patreon, it’s delightful to see what all the secrecy was about.

Does this mean I can play Portal on my Mac?

WarmSoda,

This is a new version of Half Life 1

Luvon,

Doesn’t portal already run on the Mac since forever?

Pulptastic, (edited )

Last I checked no, the game engine was 32 bit but the Mac won’t run 32 bit apps anymore. Or something like that. My hope with this refresh was 64 bit support.

Luvon,

Have you actually installed and run it? I know there were quite a few games that steam claimed couldn’t be run because of that and still did. I don’t remember if portal is one of them though.

Battleblock theater for instance says it can’t but still does.
