quortez, to android in Google Pixel 8 leak points to desktop mode support, DisplayPort over USB-C
@quortez@kbin.social avatar

8 years to not-remove a part of the spec AOSP supports natively.
8 freaking years to develop a solution for native video-out that isn't the confusing, low-quality, barely recognized DisplayLink.
8 goddamn years to admit to themselves that Chromecast mirroring is a dog shit alternative to DP-AltMode.

But 8 years hopefully come to an end.

WidowsFavoriteSon, to android in 7 things the Google Pixel Tablet does better than my iPad Air

Cool but I'll wait for LineageOS support.

I'll believe it when I see it. Took them 8 versions to do something that's in AOSP?

iturnedintoanewt,

.... Something the chipset supports. They actually removed the code that enabled it on the Pixel phones, it's kinda ridiculous.

This sounds pretty exciting actually.

I'd love it for coding on the sofa if i could pull out a laptop shell and just plug my phone into it to fire up VSCode.

StorageB, to technology in Exclusive: Here's our first look at the Fairphone 5

How is the software experience with Fairphone? Is it generally pretty stable and bug free?

@unix_joe@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Android 12 still, and that just came a few months ago.

It's a minimal stock Android without any protection against pocket dialing or ghost touches. And updates are slow to come, although I think we are finally on the third month of consistent monthly updates. aptX is a shitshow at the best, broken at the worst, so bluetooth music listening isn't great, which is not a good thing for a device that got rid of the 3.5mm jack.

You are better off using CalyxOS on the Fairphone, which fixes all of those problems, except it doesn't have true Google Play services.

Now if we could just get them in the USA...

At the same time, I kind of respect their conviction to only sell in Europe where they don't need to participate in global shipping to the same extent, and don't need to grow unsustainably. We want something like the Fairphone? Someone here has got to make it.

@fear@kbin.social avatar

This just in, Apple sues the estate of 2000+ year old man for his depiction of an apple in Genesis, the popular and riveting first book in the collaborative effort written 2 millennia ago: The Bible.

I reached out to Apple's PR representative, I'll let you know if they get back to me.

pushka,
@pushka@beehaw.org avatar

Actually Moses was VERY prudent, and strategically didn't use the exact word 'apple' only 'fruit' and 'of the tree' - because he knew apple would be a litigious bitch

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

@fear@kbin.social avatar

Apple's PR representative stated:

If all apples are fruit, and all fruit are of a tree, then surely all fruit of a tree are apples. The world needs to understand that every fruit is our intellectual property now. We've earned that place with our iconic innovation. We're currently in talks with Fruit of the Loom, and our team is confident that they will rebrand as 'Of the Loom'. It's a fresh, modern take for their products that will be mutually beneficial to both parties.

I reached out to Fruit of the Loom's PR representative, nothing yet.

Both, but mostly the refresh rate

Hopefully, they fix their camera API so that GCam works properly this time. Being stuck with the stock photo app was the only downside of version 4 imo.

grte, to technology in Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its apple logo

If the article is accurate and Apple is trying to secure IP rights over, "images of apples," surely no sane judge would rule in favour of such a wide ranging and foolish claim. I'm sure there are plenty of businesses who will be able to claim prior art over a picture of a damn apple.

Incidentally I'm trademarking the sun and then going after the entire country of Japan. I hope you aren't too attached to that flag.

zik,

A few years ago I tried to register a domain name which included the word "purple". I was told I couldn't because HP had trademarked the word "purple" so it was off the list of registerable words. I pointed out that my domain was in no way related to their purple laptops and I was told tough, no-one could for any reason register any domain which included the word "purple" because HP now owned the dictionary word "purple".

I'm still annoyed about it to this day.

Liz,

Bullshit. They just don’t want to deal with the lawsuit even though HP would be 100% in the wrong. But we don’t have a justice system, just a legal system. If you got enough money you can make nearly anything the law.

unix_joe, to technology in Exclusive: Here's our first look at the Fairphone 5
@unix_joe@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yeah, loving that blue. My FairPhone 4 needs repair, and getting replacement parts is difficult; I might just wait and trade it in for the FairPhone 5. I kind of need an LCD display, and this looks like the most premium LCD phone we will get this year (i.e. not a three year old Snapdragon 695).

unix_joe,
@unix_joe@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Also, it would be nice if FairPhone actually teamed up with Otterbox or Poetic or UAG ... anybody to provide a ruggedized case this time around. My frame bent and dented and the battery cover is torn.

aksdb,

Huh that sucks. The repairability as an argument for sustainability is not a good one if parts are then not actually available to do repairs. Repairing it during its warranty period is only one half of the coin.

    That looks rather nice. My Pixel 6 should be good for a few years yet, but I'd like to think my next phone will be a Fairphone if they keep improving like this.
