Question for the wider fediverse; where did academic Twitter end up? My wife has pulled the plug on the network formerly known as Twitter and would like to reconnect with the academics she was engaging with on that platform but it appears they’ve been scattered to the four winds.

@canned_sans_italic Some of us ended up here, but the engagement is a lot different, I don't see as many people and there's less academic discussion. I heard that some went to Bluesky. Some stayed on twitter.

But it seems like the whole thing has been broken up and scattered to various platforms. Maybe it won't ever be the same again.

It's really weird seeing USAians say that "girls are bad at math" like it's some sort of universal experience.

In Asia there's the expectation that girls are more diligent and therefore stereotyped to be good at math, and they regularly outperform the boys.

@amirrahnama Same with the math department at my university in Malaysia, majority women.

That's why I find it weird that the myth still persists. There's so much empirical evidence that disproves it outside of western culture.

@geraineon Yes. University enrollment for STM is majority female. Only E is mostly male.

@geraineon It's the last bastion of mankind. Everything else has been taken over by womenkind.

It might be worth keeping in mind that certain herbs can assist with keeping ex-boyfriends away.

@Ellirahim @juergen_hubert @raymccarthy @germany @folklore @rorystarr There are plenty of crocodile spirits and shamans in Malaysia though.

I remember hearing a story from Dungun about how a car that fell off a bridge could not be found until a shaman waded into the crocodile filled waters and appeased the local crocodile spirit.

The Mah Meri also have a moyang buaya.

@Ellirahim @juergen_hubert @raymccarthy @germany @folklore @rorystarr Everything in Malaysia has a spirit. Animism is deeply entrenched in our society. A lot of Malay rituals are based on some form of interactions with the spirit.

There were even sea spirits that we have to appease.

Instead of being intimidated by a dauntingly large project, try breaking it up into small tasks and being totally overwhelmed by them.

Next time if I go to Genting I’ll stay here

Clickbait-y title/opening aside, this is a fascinating place that’s so much more than “it’s creepy/haunted”. People LIVE here. There’s a community inside with shops and barbers and all that.

@rakyat @cafe I've stayed there for 3 months while doing my undergrad/ masters thesis on Highland carrion flies.

Half the time I probably smelled like a corpse, so I didn't have any supernatural encounters.

@rakyat @cafe I do have one ghost story about that place. But my phone battery is low now.

@rakyat @cafe I was placing the dead animals or bait there and trapping flies and beetles.
