It's really weird seeing USAians say that "girls are bad at math" like it's some sort of universal experience.

In Asia there's the expectation that girls are more diligent and therefore stereotyped to be good at math, and they regularly outperform the boys.

@ubi I think it's like ... You have to be good at everything STEM. Haha.

@geraineon Yes. University enrollment for STM is majority female. Only E is mostly male.

@ubi ah true. my cousins who went into engineering (specifically civil engineering) said it can get very misogynistic

@geraineon It's the last bastion of mankind. Everything else has been taken over by womenkind.

@ubi In Iran, I majored in applied math in university and more than 95% of my classmates were women.

@amirrahnama Same with the math department at my university in Malaysia, majority women.

That's why I find it weird that the myth still persists. There's so much empirical evidence that disproves it outside of western culture.

@ubi
western culture is very much about suppressing females, especially in areas where you can make a lot of money > male overrepresentation in stem simply accelerates a process resulting in exclusion of females in many career fields

last year's protests in iran partly resulted from those problems
