tymon,

Honeybees moved into my backyard recently. I guess they somehow attract a lot of different wildlife in some mysterious way, because we now have cardinals, blue jays, possums, chipmunks, and marble lizards living back there too.

For context, I live in Ridgewood Queens, so this feels absolutely insane. Loving every second of it but god damn

tymon,

I'M A BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY

tymon,

the whole de-federating thing is seriously turning me off to the whole concept of lemmy, it’s like little dictators with their sceptres cutting off entire communities from each other. it’s a major flaw and I hope it gets addressed as lemmy/fediverse evolves, or else it’s not going to work

tymon,

See, that would be such a better option. Let individual users block servers from appearing for them alone in any interactive sense. The Beehaw defederation was not only terrible timing, but it exposed the biggest achilles heel of this whole idea.

tymon,

I’m not fully in the know on this by any means, but from what I understand, Beehaw’s admins/mods decided to defederate from sh.itjustwor.ks and lemmy.world because of an inability to moderate effectively due to the massive influx of new Lemmy users last week - most of which were in those two instances, as they have open registration.

Beehaw requires you to apply to join.

tymon,

Don’t show your ass like this. Don’t do the “oh you like waffles so you hate pancakes???” meme. I didn’t say or suggest a single thing you just said.

What I actually DID say is that allowing mods admins to defederate entire communities is stupid. If you want to talk about THAT, fine.

EDIT: admins, not mods, my mistake, thanks god

tymon,

I think there’s definitely a bit of a gated-garden mentality here, but it’s mostly just being overwhelmed. If they had more help, or had ASKED for more help, it would probably have been much different. I’m new here myself so I’m not going to pretend to understand the nuances here.

tymon,

I'm a serial monogamist with novels. Three, four, five reads, and then I'll move on to the next one once someone "borrows" it.

tymon,

Trying to constantly remind myself that none of us are immune to propaganda, and that it would be really easy for this scenario to be misrepresented as a clean-sweep against the Russian military. Wagner's def gonna cause serious problems but I'd frankly be shocked if this ended with a successful coup or any meaningful change (tho I hope I'm wrong)

tymon,

This is gonna get so fucked up.

tymon,

"I won't be pooping for the next three days"

tymon,

Over in c/asklemmy, someone asked for advice on how to not poop for three days, and it seems to have officially become The First Lemmy Meme

tymon,

"Tell my wife I exploded and that it was very sad and that the last thing I said was make sure my wife doesn't use my toilet"

tymon,

Late June 2023 is going to be a very strange anthropological investigation for future internet archaeologists

tymon,

Voat was a racist, fascist hell-hole where the most terminally-online and unlikeable people on the internet were corralled together. It was the social equivalent of shooting fish in a barrel.

Lemmy seems to be insulated from Voat's fate because it was a hard left-turn in the face of a platform implosion.

PRODIGY's cancellation may have been the tip of the iceberg: Paramount as We Know It Has 2 Years Left, at Most — Analyst (www.indiewire.com)

That article speculates that elements of Paramount (including CBS Studios, which produces Trek these days) could be sold off to other companies, perhaps even Netflix. This, however, doesn't get into the hairy discussion surrounding rights to the franchise.

tymon,

Between this and the potential Netflix merger/acq, it's looking prettttttttty fucking grim for the alpha quadrant

tymon,

I have done two seven-day fasts and four three-day fasts. You'll want to prep with fasting practice and then watch your water intake to make sure you're not dehydrated.

I would pay $50 to know why the fuck you're doing this.

Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x02 "Ad Astra Per Aspera"

::: spoiler Logline Commander Una Chin-Riley faces court-martial along with possible imprisonment and dishonorable dismissal from Starfleet, and her defense is in the hands of a lawyer who’s also a childhood friend with whom she had a terrible falling out. :::...

tymon,

I largely quite like SNW, but this episode had some extremely questionable eugenics apologia laced into the narrative.

I think the broadest problem with nu-trek (though it's strongly reined in in SNW) is the heavily maudlin over-scoring and the bathos-laden dialogue. When almost every exchange between two characters sounds "perfectly written" and is dripping in score, it's hard to take seriously.

If SNW employed like, 20% more restraint in that regard, it would sing.

The Guardian view on danger at sea: The contrast between the frantic hunt for a missing submersible and the failure to save migrants drowning in the Mediterranean is illuminating (www.theguardian.com)

A massive operation is under way to find and save a stricken vessel and its passengers. As time passes, anxious families and friends wait with growing fear. The US coastguard, Canadian armed forces and commercial vessels are all hunting for the Titan submersible, which has gone missing with five aboard on a dive to the wreck of...

tymon,

Capitalist media only cares about sexy tragedies and expensive dangers. Focusing on 500 poors gasping their last breaths far from view only serves to remind viewers of how unfair things are on a basic level - and that threatens power.

The thing is, I’ve ***never ***seen such an overwhelmingly bored response from the general public to a Sexy Tragedy like this before. The only person in my life who expressed any iota of distress over the Titan is my dear mother, but she cried when we dropped off our old TV at Goodwill, so.

People are, I think, getting a little bit harder to trick with the song-and-dance of the hyper-rich dying in outstanding ways.

“When the rich are too rich there are ways, and when the poor are too poor there are ways… This is one of the ways when the poor are too poor. When the rich are too rich there is a way, and if I am not mistaken, that way will come soon.” - Pearl S. Buck
