triktrek,

Yeah, I couldn’t stop thinking about DS9’s Duet with this episode. Lots of comparisons, though I think there was a lot more grey-ish morality in the SNW world. War is complicated and it sucks for everyone involved.

triktrek,

As someone else mentioned in another comment, it’s bonkers that SNW can do a cartoon episode, a war episode and a musical episode back-to-back. I love now experimental SNW is!

triktrek,

Even with this “backstory” of this green juice, it really isn’t much of a backstory. It’s just explained as some chemical that makes you stronger – it still feels like a cheap plot device, and that action sequence in the season opener was still unexpectedly long.

triktrek,

They should take the idea of “storing people in buffers” all the way to extreme and explore it like Black Mirror does. What does this mean if everyone had the opportunity to store people in buffers? Can everyone sign up for this service and instantly beam you into a buffer whenever you have an incurable diseases at the time? Is there a service to auto-beam you into the buffer if the ship is about to crash-land? Can richer people pay to have poorer people’s buffer be deleted when you run out of buffer space? What happens if there is a glitch and people who are in the buffer experience 20 years in real-time?

I think there’s so much potential for more exploration here. It would be cool to have Charlie Booker on a Star Trek episode, as he kinda did a fun/excellent/dark Star Trek Black Mirror episode too.

triktrek,

You know the way Boimler was crawling under the communications panel, with his right legs at a 90 degree angle. It was just so perfect embodiment.

triktrek,

Also, at the end of the LD Season 4 trailer, Mariner and Boimler mentioned something about “the Pike thing we are not supposed to talk about”. Maybe there will be some more LD/SNW developments.

triktrek,

I hope the Enterprise crew gets to walk around yelling “Upper Decks! Upper Decks! Upper Decks!”

triktrek,

Did you not learn anything from Mariner? Work is gonna be there still five 45 minutes from now.

triktrek,

Or even just the way he was running to catch up with Mariner.

triktrek,

Oh I didn’t know that. Is there some (real life) Star Trek connection that brought them together or is it just some coincidence that they both are on Star Trek?

triktrek,

You kind of got the feeling the 23rd century officers were all left wondering why 24th century Starfleet is so unprofessional

I don’t think it’s the difference between 23rd vs 24th century officers, but more a difference between upper deck senior officers and lower decks ensigns.

triktrek,

I didn’t quite get the reference with Spock’s arm. Was this supposed to reference something in previous Trek?

triktrek,

She also delivers the many one-line commentaries on dire situations. It’s funny at first, but it does get old pretty quickly.

triktrek,

SNW is such a good show with strong cast and characters and storylines. They totally can stand on their own without trying to bring back legacy characters or storylines. I am not sure why the producers seem to be hell bent on trying to weave these characters back in.

triktrek,

We keep hearing rumblings of episode 9 as nuts, maybe a musical?

Episode 9 is going to be nuts and at conventions Anson Mount has also hinted that the Lower Decks crossover is not even the craziest thing they have done this season.

Buckle in, folks! This is gonna be awesome and I am here for it!

triktrek,

Hehe, yeah, same here. My favorite one was the “What the F—” from Spock from the teaser.

triktrek,

When Pike was serving that tray of food only to make a 90 degree turn, lol

triktrek,

It’s sci-fi – if the producers feel strongly enough to make a blank slate, they can always retcon or shall I say future-con, and have SNW branch out a different timeline.

triktrek,

Nice catch. Also, T’Lyn was introduced in “wej Duj” and was named of writer Kathryn Lyn. Seems like Lyn has a knack for Vulcans. According to Memory Alpha, she’s a big Star Trek fan and cosplayed at conventions.

triktrek,

Make sure to set your language settings to both UNDETERMINED and ENGLISH. It’s some Lemmy bug.

triktrek,

Y’all ready to buy that Star Trek beanie at the next Trek convention? Makes for easy cosplay, especially if you have human ears.

triktrek, (edited )

All the jokes aside, the music right before Spock and Chapel kiss was beautiful.

triktrek,

Make sure to select both.

triktrek,

Regarding the LED wall, yeah, it was more obvious here. It felt like they were entering one of those gimmicky project-Van-Gogh-art-on-a-warehouse-wall tourist traps.

The episode where Uhura and Hemmer were trapped in the engine room was another one that stood out.

triktrek,

Edit: I just realized that the episode was written by Kathryn Lyn who also wrote one of Lower Decks’ funniest episodes, “wej Duj”. She seems to become Star Trek’s go-to gal for comedy.

Makes perfect sense when you realize that T’Lyn (named after her) was another passive aggressive Vulcan that provides comic relief was introduced in “wej Duj”.

triktrek,

Good CGI/LED walls blend in. If you notice it, it breaks the 4th wall a bit. Battlestar Galactica 2004 had CGI and it worked so well and looks very believable.

triktrek,

It most certainly will be a comedy, and I am up for it. It’s ironic how the episodes with emotionless Vulcans are so god-damn funny. The last episode with the body swap was a masterclass in writing. Passive aggressiveness has never been this fun.

triktrek,

I mean, what else could they promote instead? Those are the only shows still in production or have entire unreleased seasons.

Who are your favorite Trek reviewers/Youtubers?

I have a few, my fav is Jessie Gender, who gives insightful reviews but doesnt shy away from criticism of Trek. I also like how she looks at things from a gender critical angle, which is something few peoppe think about. Sean Ferrick is another cool one, as are the guys from Trekyards who are more focussed on tech and ships. Who...

triktrek,

Rowan J Coleman’s Star Trek Retrospective series is superb and is what made his YouTube channel famous. He has now branched to other SciFi movies too which are equally interesting.

It’s unfortunate that he said that he won’t have in depth retrospectives about new Trek series but hopefully he’ll change his minds when series like Discovery will end.

triktrek,

I assume you know the Nitpicker’s Guide to […] Trekkers book series? It was such a fun book series from the 1990s. I even submitted my own nitpicks and Phil send me a membership card. Fun times.

triktrek,

Is this going to get fixed soon? This is massively misleading for new people who think that this sub isn’t active.

Earlier I tried to post something and it only even allows me to pick Undermined only when creating the post. I couldn’t even choose English.

Thanks.

triktrek,

And this “Previously on” was also not actually that useful/needed.

triktrek,

Toronto passing as New York for characters was so meta and hilarious.

triktrek,

Minor thing but the teaser jumped straight into the opening credits (without fading into black first) and I thought that was cool.

triktrek,

The love interest between them developed to quickly in my opinion. It felt a bit unnatural, especially for La'an who is usually much more in control of her responsibilities and composure.

triktrek,

I agree. SNW has a really strong cast, and great writers. The show truly can be episodic without referencing any previous canon and still be fantastic and even appreciated more by new watchers of Star Trek.

triktrek,

Regarding Nurse Chapel almost dying - this is one of the TV/movie tropes that I think is such a cheap and terrible device and I am tired of it. Discovery was full of these scenes where they make you believe a main character really almost died, only to survive after all, and having their crew mates weep for them (I am looking at you Burnham). There are much better ways to create good drama.
