Not too surprising given their current situation and previous launch success rate. If anything, I’m surprised how long it is taking for the company to go under.
“Magellan was murderous and awful but that isn’t the primary issue,” David W. Hogg, a professor of physics and data science at New York University and Group Leader for astronomical data at the Flatiron Institute, told Space.com. “The primary issue is that the clouds aren’t his discovery.”
Oops. How did his name even get attached to the clouds in the first place? The article doesn’t give specifics.
Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, inaugurated the spaceport at a ceremony Nov. 2. The spaceport is located at Nordmela on the Norwegian island of Andøya inside the Arctic Circle and is in the final stages towards operating capability, according to a Nov. 2 press statement....
B1058 launched at 2023-11-04 00:37 UTC, and landed on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas at 00:45 UTC, setting a new record for Falcon 9 booster reuse at 18 flights.
It seems like it might be. I suppose one could argue that the Falcon Heavy demo test flight could count as privately funded interplanetary mission, since its orbit crosses Mars’ orbit, but it didn’t go to Mars. There have also been a few interplanetary probes built by universities but launched by government agencies like NASA and JAXA.
Still technically next year! Though the Venus transfer window does extend into 2025, and modified version of Berger’s Law indicates that a slip to the right is likely:
Berger’s Law: If rocket is predicted to [launch] in Q4 of a calendar year, and that quarter is six or more months away, the launch will be delayed.
No, I don’t believe they have. But Beck is quoted in the article as saying “We look forward to sharing the details of the review once it is fully complete ahead of returning to flight this quarter”, so it sounds like they will announce it at some point.
Depends on the size of the satellites. The Transporter-1 Rideshare mission launched 143 satellites. The original v1 Starlink satellites were launched in batches of ~60, but they’ve since switched over to the v2-mini satellites, which are heavier than v1. A single Falcon 9 can launch about 23 v2-minis in reusable mode.
The US definitely has a much higher mass-to-orbit capability than Russia does at the moment.
Cold fusion was always a hoax, as far as I know. Regular hot fusion has been 20 years away for 50 years, but we may at last be seeing some progress. ITER is finally being assembled (very slowly), and some of the newer startups like Helion and Commonwealth Fusion Systems seem promising. NIF also achieved Q > 1 last year, but inertial confinement doesn’t easily scale up to a power plant.

Nothing to see here, just Blue Origin continuing to achieve slow and small results on a large budget.
