Book reviews aren’t normally ‘my thing’, whatever that is, what ever that means. But here’s a new one anyway. A strange start to a strange book series. Let me know what you think. If you’ve heard of it. If you’ve read it. If you might want to.

starbreaker,

@duanetoops I've read Sandman Slim and some of Kadrey's other stuff like The Grand Dark, and while the writing style in SS might not be to your taste I found that it suited the protagonist (from whose viewpoint the novel was written) as well as that tattered Joy Division t-shirt he hasn't managed to dig out of his old closet yet.

starbreaker,

@duanetoops No, I haven't. Not all of the books are available at my local public library, and inter-library loan isn't a thing for ebooks via Overdrive.

starbreaker,

@ExcessivelyDiverting Who is Jeffrey Davies that I should consider his opinions?

starbreaker,

@_bydbach_ @ExcessivelyDiverting That's valid AF, and I see where you're coming from. Nevertheless, there's a whiff of cultural authoritarianism in Davies' piece that I find distasteful; I don't care for book bloggers who express their preferences as prescriptions, and I think that's what Davies is doing in this piece.

I think it would have been stronger if he had not burdened us with what a slog Edith Wharton was to him as an undergrad; it was at that point that I wanted to grab him by the collar and tell him to check his privilege, because not all of us had the luxury of going to college, let alone going to college and studying literature.

starbreaker,

@_bydbach_ @ExcessivelyDiverting Speaking of "cultural authoritarianism", here's an essay by Josh Cook on "good literary taste" and how it's often weaponized as a tool of oppression.

Is there a story where the Martians are not an austere, reserved, spartan, militarized, conscientious and super techy bunch of people?

Here's Roger Zelazny's story. It's actually pretty short. web.archive.org/web/2004030718…

I know this might seem an odd request, but I'd like to celebrate the removal of my first novel's edition from . It was published by a now-defunct small press that went out of business in early 2019 and orphaned a lot of books, so if anybody had bought the Kindle edition of Without Bloodshed since then I wouldn't have gotten paid.

The only reason my 2013 debut is still on Amazon is that secondhand print copies are available for sale. Now I can go full if I want.

@bookstodon

starbreaker,

@PaxAsteriae I will have to wait a few hours before I can break out the bubbly. I've got lessons after work and I need to be able to drive.

@ExcessivelyDiverting Sure. Why not? A mostly non-white cast worked with Bridgerton.
