This paraphrase from Tristan Harris (by way of Freedom Baird) came across the in Ed discussion group and seems worth sharing: The advent of social media was our “first contact” with AI, and we didn’t anticipate the negative consequences in time. And now LLMs constitute our “second contact” and let’s not screw it up.

@w8emv @editor @edutooters What about "The Policeman's Beard is Half Constructed: Computer Prose and Poetry by Racter- The First Book Ever Wrritten by a Computer Paperback – January 1, 1984?"

@editor @w8emv @edutooters I think that there are probably societally consequential AI examples predating social media.

If we look at the use of AI in the stock market we might not initially see it with societal implications but it did assume some of the decision making regarding the directions of society.

Alternatively if you want to think about direct impact then I would consider traffic control systems or even building HVAC controls.

New Blog Post: Edtechman-I think by 5th grade students should have some exposure to syntax coding. Block coding is fine but if you want to ratchet up problem solving and coding literacy, syntax coding is the way to go. It’s a natural progression, but I think the average teacher is scared to go 2 syntax coding. I want to change that. http://edtechman.blogspot.com/?m=0 #python #coding #education #education #teaching #5thgrade @edutooters @donwatkins #programming #ipensource #trinket.io

@rickweinberg @edutooters @donwatkins I teach high school but many of my students have never had access to a computer before my class.

I feel strongly that mixed environments, such as provided by code dot org, that allow you to see the same code as both syntax and blocks can be helpful for developing competency. Scholars naturally move to syntax based programming for efficiency gains when they are ready with the support of being able to return to blocks for clarity.

@jcastroarnaud @RuthFlaherty @edutooters this is interesting. One can assume that vampires can access the curtilage and that a vampire police officer could enter a side yard visible from public areas with exigent circumstances but most of the legends refer to home owners and not simply occupants. Could a landlord give permission? Do renters with a lease have more protections than those in an Airbnb?
