@bookstodon

I need to buy a gift for a family-of-friend. I am informed that they really like mystery stories, especially in historical settings, but are not fond of SFF.

I assume this means they have already read the obvious candidates, the Cadfaels and the like, or if they haven't then that's a conscious choice on their part which means I shouldn't buy them one of those.

What's a non-SFF mystery story you've enjoyed recently? Recommend me a book please!

@SCampbell @passenger @bookstodon has the creepy merit of being non fiction! That's a really good book.

Every article I've read about that Cybertruck has been really amusing.

@StillIRise1963 can you imagine being the engineer Musk stumbled to with a doodle of that thing on a napkin?

Musk: isn't it amazing?
Engineer: ha ha, oh you're serious, yeah boss, it's amazing.
Musk: you're going to make it.
Engineer: um me? Make it? What do you mean?
Musk: and it's going to be exactly like this drawing if you want your children to have food on the table.
Engineer: ok boss. Sure boss. Right away boss.
Musk: and make sure it has bullet proof windows.
Engineer: sure sure

@StillIRise1963 and super untaxed and unregulated. You can't make that piece of shit if you didn't have money to set on fire.

Revolt
The Worldwide Uprising Against Globalisation

Revolt is an eloquent and provocative challenge to the prevailing wisdom about the rise of nationalism and populism.

@appassionato @bookstodon fighting globalization because of frustration with the current liberal world order (read capitalism with human rights) with populism and nationalism is exactly what Mussolini, Hitler and Tojo agreed on to form the Axis.

What could possibly go wrong?

On House floor, debate on expulsion resolution of Rep George

3 of his fellow NY GOPers are here & supporting measure. Santos is here too (in bright red sweater beneath his coat)

Rep Dan Goldman said Santos is here”bc of lies”

Rep Lawler (R-NY): “Based on the conviction of his (campaign) treasurer & admission of the fraud that was perpetrated on donors… that is more than sufficient evidence & info to expel Mr Santos”

@GottaLaff just saying to whoever cares: a pet peeve of mine is politicians facing consequences prescribed by the constitution for political misconduct screaming that they are being denied a legal right to due process in CRIMINAL proceedings.

He's being fired. He's getting way more due process than most people do when getting fired. We tried to fire Trump.

If he's expelled and the people in his district want him back or disagree with Congress he should just run again.

On Nov. 27, 1978, the late Dianne Feinstein, then the 45-year-old president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two-time failed mayoral candidate called a press conference to announce her retirement.

That afternoon, a supervisor shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey White.

Feinstein handled the moment with poise, and went on to serve 9 years as mayor and 3 decades in the U.S. Senate.

@TheConversationUS @histodons Harvey MILK are you kidding me? Harvey MILK was assassinated. What the actual ****?

How do you not KNOW this? Forget making a mistake. You should know that one of the first openly gay politicians was assassinated. Say his name!

Just started Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin. Apparently the later books of the cycle are disliked by fans. I am bewildered by that assessment. I can already tell this is an all-time favorite.

Everything from the prose to the characters feels more mature and meditative. Gender is also examined in a much more holistic and painful way. Several passages have already spoken to my soul in such a deep way that I know will remain with me for a long time

@derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon do you know what a mother in law is?

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon I mean, context? But I guess in some places it's called an efficiency, maybe. Though that's not exactly what this was as it had a full living room, dining room, bedroom and bath.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@CandaceRobbAuthor @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon I'm not sure jargon is quite right but it works. Yes, it's an apartment inside a house. Perhaps it's a west coast term though if you know Canon Beach you must be in Oregon.

I heard she was delightful unless you tried to take away someone's rights.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon Some one asked me if my house had an efficiency in Miami and I hadn't a clue what she meant. But it's functionally the same, I gathered, though I feel like an efficiency is more of a studio apartment where a mother in law can be a separate house (in that case synonymous with a guest house)

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @Grizzlysgrowls @hawksquill interesting! Is a granny flat a self sufficient apartment within a larger house? (So has at least a kitchen and bathroom and a place for a bed)

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@Grizzlysgrowls @ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill interesting. California required those for a while during World War II in some places. Then they suddenly outlawed apartments in some cities (because the workers who moved in were often Black). I guess they finally realized how self harming racsim is after nearly 80 years. 🤦‍♂️

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @Grizzlysgrowls @hawksquill yeah that's it. I think we'd call it a lot here in the States but yes.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @Grizzlysgrowls @wordstitcher @hawksquill it can be those things or a converted section of a house. Or, as was the case in WWII in parts of California, purpose built.

philip_cardella,
@philip_cardella@historians.social avatar

@derpoltergeist @Grizzlysgrowls @ukaunz @bookstodon @wordstitcher @hawksquill same. Lots of phrases to learn. Always amazes me how different language can be.

Living in Miami where they speak Caribean Spanish (and I'm used to Mexican Spanish) I'm learning new phrases in Spanish too.
