How do elected representatives understand democracy and their own role in it?

In a new paper with @haefner and [email protected] in German Politics, we present results of a survey conducted among German legislators in state parliaments and the Bundestag in 2022.

We have also published the corresponding data set:

Should we adjust the ideal of #Democracy to institutional reality or should we try to bring reality closer to the ideal?

In a new paper 🎉 , @VerglPolwi and I argue that deliberative responsiveness constitutes a promise representative democracy can fulfill.

We show how contemporary democracies struggle to meet this standard and discuss three institutional innovations to improve deliberative responsiveness.

Who do you think is the most underrated philosopher? 🤔

Nice question! I'm not a philosopher myself, so I don't really have an opinion. Who do you think is the most underrated living/dead philospher? And who is the most overrated one?

I'm greatly looking forward to the in next week, but very annoyed that the ECPR are only advertising it on Twitter.

Who else is going? I have not been to Prague before - any tips on what I should not miss?

If I follow someone here, I want to hear about all of their new publications, research projects and career developments! And I'm also happy to celebrate with anyone who has just finished the first draft of chapter 2 of their thesis, submitted a proposal for conference or finished their grading for this term.

The only thing I don't like so much is when very senior people post only about own achievements without ever appreciating those of others.

I have organized both 'call for papers' and 'invitation only' events. For the former, 80-90% of proposals came from men. For 'invitation only' events, we deliberately recruited a diverse group of participants and tried to match early career and more senior researchers to foster mentoring relationships and co-authorships. You can of course try to combine a call with invitations to ensure a good balance of participants.

In my experience, 3 months is about the average time and I have waited for up to 9 months, too. But I think you can inquire about the status of your paper after 3 months.

Taking into account the typical “decline” response rate, at least 6 very suitable reviewers from the top of the list will be invited. These are busy people, so only one of them accepts the invitation. This is , who will write a helpful and constructive review. (2/4)

Thank you for participating in my little survey on acceptance of review invitations. The result is obviously not representative - Mastodon users seem to review much more than average academics do. But the variation is interesting and relevant for my theory of which I will post later today!

I don't have a strong opinion on this, but to me personally, a Dr in the user name makes the profile appear less rather than more academic. Think about author names on book covers, where the Dr in the author name is supposed to lend kudos, but actually signals that the book is written for a non-academic audience. The decision may of course be a different one if, for example, you are a medical doctor posting on Covid and trying to reach a broader audience.
