    Does any company make a hot water heater that uses the waste heat from air conditioning to help heat the water? Was just staring at my utility closet where my water heater sits right next to my furnace and suddenly it seemed obvious and dumb that I use electricity in to heat my water, then use more electricity to pump heat out of my condo and into the air outside

    G'morning @jerry

    Since the recent upgrade, I've noticed something very odd with the site. It continually forgets that I use the glitch interface when I start up in the morning. I have to go into preferences, not change anything but save anyway, and then it goes back to the multi-panels that I want.

    ksaj,
    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry @jrdepriest I don't mind the URL either way, but it always starts off in single-column format before re-saving the config.

    @jerry @jrdepriest Yes, I've already changed the link to https://infosec.exchange/deck/notifications, which brings me to my usual starting point with 3 panels instead of 1 super-wide one.

    I am going to be disabling image uploads and image serving, moving to moderated signups, and instituting some extensive block lists on infosec.pub due to the pervasive problems with CSAM attacks on lemmy instances.

    No, it’s not happened to any of our instances yet, but I don’t need that headache. And if anyone does, I promise you that I will make it my life’s mission to see that those responsible are convicted and rotting in prison where they belong. ❤️

    Edit: h/t to @infosec_jcp for pointing out the problem to me.

    ksaj,
    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry @infosec_jcp That's quite a daring kind of attack to conduct, given that it raises the likelihood of various legal entities hunting them down. Pretty senseless, too.

    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry @Enigma @infosec_jcp Child Porn is quite an appropriate term for it. I don't know why there is always this drive to throw new terms and acronyms after everything that already exists.

    @NosirrahSec @jerry @Enigma @infosec_jcp There are all kinds of porn that do not imply consent. We don't have special 4 letter acronyms for them.

    @jerry Cell phones have made me miss cameras that actually do things with focus and field of view.

    ksaj,
    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry I'm setting up to do a video series using Raspberry Pi. I bought a 4-headed camera HAT, and plan on putting various lenses in front of them so it's not just different angles, but different period.

    I'll of course have to document that because that in itself is a pretty cool project.

    ksaj,
    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry I bought it because of the 4 heads, but they are all on the standard Raspberry Pi ribbon cable - meaning they are very short.

    So, adventurous me realized that I have these mini lenses that are meant for putting in front of the cell phone lenses, and that greatly extends what I even wanted to do with the 4 Pi cameras to begin with.

    Sort of a happy accident.

    @jerry I currently only know of one person who moved from here to another instance.

    You don't have to feel bad about them. Their reason was infosec was very much a minor interest compared to the instance they chose to land on.

    ksaj,
    @ksaj@infosec.exchange avatar

    @jerry Cores matter more than speed, for sure.

    I wanted a fairly cheap laptop, so I went for a fast one with only 2 cores. Super cheap.

    I can't believe how long I have to wait for some things to start! The speed is meaningless when you have to wait so long for a process to even start!

    My slower clocked 12-core Mac that I use for recording music runs like melted butter. Smooth and delicious! It is way the heck faster even though it is also way older than this craptop!

    Max cores totally matter.
