I'm an irritated academic who is increasingly dismayed by the general lack of critical thinking skills displayed by the general public in the United States.

My spouse loves young adult Dystopian fiction and is looking for their next read, if anyone has any suggestions!

@itobiasgray @bookstodon Maybe try Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_Groan It's dystopian but not in the usual way. The book is the first of a trilogy although you can safely ignore the following two volumes without missing anything.

@georgetakei This is all of a piece with the so-called biblical view of the conservatives. It's the warped notion that women should be subjugated to their menfolk, that there are only two distinct genders, that women in every way are the lesser sex. Independent women who don't fit that subordinate stereotype enrage them.

O have fallen into a hole of Patrick O’Brian’s making (currently at The Surgeon’s Mate) and greatly enjoying it. I had believed the branding and thought these were Manly Men’s books, no girls or feelings allowed. Now considering making these mandatory reading for all boys when I take over the world. @bookstodon

@camilla_hoel @bookstodon They're delightful reading, aren't they? They make me want to run away to sea!

Exactly 75 years ago, President Harry S. Truman repudiated 170 years of officially sanctioned discrimination when he signed Executive Order 9981, calling for desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces. This event marked the first time a U.S. commander in chief used executive order to implement a civil rights policy, inspiring America to embrace desegregation in the future.

@Deglassco @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon A good accompaniment to this excellent thread is the fact that yesterday was Buffalo Soldier Day: https://www.army.mil/article/248832/honoring_national_buffalo_soldiers_day
