On Nov. 27, 1978, the late Dianne Feinstein, then the 45-year-old president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and two-time failed mayoral candidate called a press conference to announce her retirement.

That afternoon, a supervisor shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey White.

Feinstein handled the moment with poise, and went on to serve 9 years as mayor and 3 decades in the U.S. Senate.

@TheConversationUS Thanks for the post. Surprised to see the article state that she was "never connected to a singular important issue;" her crusade against the CIA over torture of prisoners is legend, and "never authored landmark legislation" is false. She authored the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. Just bc they let it expire doesn't mean you should leave it out. I guess what I'm getting at is there's a cleaner way to say, "Great career but should have retired like ten years ago." cc @histodons
