I think the rush to recreate communities is a bad idea. (kbin.social)

If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....

brickfrog,

Yeah you’re right, there are already a ton of duplicate & niche communities spread across different Lemmy/Kbin instances. It’s strange when someone decides to go create yet another niche community in another instance when there’s plenty of others on the same topic with barely any activity of their own.

I’m also seeing a lot of accounts creating communities without doing anything else afterwards. Communities won’t succeed if the creators/moderators have no interest in posting anything or even updating their own sidebar description.

brickfrog,

About to buy my first private tracker invite from a forum, any suggestions?

Don’t.

brickfrog,

Just as a sidenote if you really want to go that route there are some trackers that can be joined with a donation upfront. It is better to join trackers with an invite, or wait for open signups, or interview to join if possible, but if you’re really thinking of going that route at least this won’t break any of the tracker’s rules.

See opentrackers.org/tag/donation-signup/ for example.

PS - Joining a tracker that way does not make you immune to their rules just FYI, you’ll still get banned eventually for not seeding/maintaining ratio & things like that.

brickfrog,

Just a heads up the Trackers community has an invites post you could participate in

It took a while but I finally got my Reddit data export (kbin.social)

It took several weeks but I finally got my Reddit data export for my account. If it wasn't already obvious, the direct messages there are not encrypted in any meaningful way. One interesting variable I found was in the file named "statistics", there's a variable named "is_deleted" which is set to false. This makes me wonder if,...

brickfrog,

Just curious, did you note if you had any edited posts/comments prior to the data export? What did you receive in the export for those?

And if you had edited, then later deleted, posts/comments what ended up being exported?

brickfrog,

That might be expected? They just announced that chats/messages prior to January 1 2023 were nuked so you probably won’t see anything prior to that date.

See the earlier posts

lemmy.world/post/1481089 (from !reddit)

lemmy.ml/post/2045081 (from !reddit)

What’s strange is that the articles claim a data request should still be able to get you that old data but I guess that’s not entirely true.

brickfrog,

No according to admin, see the comment thread in the other post

brickfrog,

AFAIK the only usenet indexer specialized in audiobook content is abook.link

There are no usenet indexers specialized in ebook/book content. You’d have to try your luck with general usenet indexers, or try searching for those manually outside of Readarr automation, or try non-usenet sources.

qBittorrent seems to be the only foss torrent client with both i2p and sonarr support

Just FYI both BiglyBT and PicoTorrent have I2P support. Also keep in mind the I2P router itself has a built in torrent client.

Unfortunately none of those have direct Sonarr support but you should be able to use them as a Sonarr Torrent Blackhole if need be.

I think (?) you should be able to use Sonarr normally (in clearnet) & have it send the .torrent files to the blackhole folder where your torrent client auto picks it up as a watch folder. The torrent client is the one doing the actual downloading so if it’s already configured for I2P then it’ll do the torrenting via I2P.

Granted I don’t have that sort of setup here on my end but it should work fine AFAICT (someone using I2P regularly can confirm)

EDIT: Just FYI there’s no guarantee you’ll find torrent peers within the I2P network but you can always try & see what happens. The same torrent hashes would work regardless of I2P or clearnet. And technically you may end up finding peers via I2P outproxies but I’m not too sure if it’s a good idea to flood outproxies with torrent traffic long term.

brickfrog,

If PicoTorrent meets your needs then you’re fine, it’s a great torrent client.

I tend to use qBittorrent, Deluge, rTorrent/ruTorrent.

Below is the list of desktop/server torrent clients people have mentioned over on the old subreddit.

I’ll just add that it’s best to avoid current versions of BitTorrent/uTorrent/Vuze nowadays. (Vuze users should migrate to BiglyBT)

!opensignups

Maybe the Open Signups thread in !trackers if it gets active.

Most people have settled on TorrentGalaxy, 1337x, Rutracker, etc. Or work your way into private torrent trackers, they were always better than RARBG anyway.

brickfrog,

I know those site admins like to spam Reddit but beyond that I can’t tell why people recommend it. The team behind it are the same people that run tons of proxy sites essentially pretending to be 1337x, TPB, etc.

In other words that site is essentially a 1337x mirror with the word “RARBG” in the name. I looked at the first page of their “Recent Torrents” and they are all from 1337x.

Not to mention the ads are insane there, most normal people won’t even be able to do anything there LOL.

And they link a non-functional RSS page while the real RARBG had an awesome RSS feed. If they had that I’d cut them some slack, it’d be a 1337x mirror with a working RSS feed at least. (the actual 1337x has no RSS feeds)

brickfrog, (edited )

Keep an eye on !opensignups and/or opentrackers.org

Maybe also monitor the invites thread at !trackers though I’m not too sure how active that’ll be.

EDIT: Fixed links

brickfrog,

Yes you need to subscribe to a paid usenet provider to download anything from usenet. You would configure its server details in your usenet downloader software (SABnzbd / NZBGet).

The .nzb you get from your usenet indexer helps you locate binaries you want to download via usenet. You can manually load those into your usenet downloader software or use automation tools to automatically do it for you. (Sonarr, Radarr, etc.)

PS - May want to see the usenet communities also:

So... are Lemmy users also generally crypto supporters?

Just got very lightly flamed by another user for making fun of crypto and was told that Lemmy and crypto have “the exact same advantages and disadvantages”. Now I disagree heavily there, since even if it shares some principles I’d argue that the scale of the problems change when you’re talking about a global finance...

brickfrog,

I do own & use cryptocurrencies a bit but would never had thought to link Lemmy to anything crypto related. Don’t even follow any crypto communities around here… being part of the Reddit exodus, over on Reddit there’s so much spam and shills surrounding the topic that I avoid those communities there too.

My guess is you just happened to run into a random crypto bro.

brickfrog,

Automation apps have gotten more popular over the years so yes, they are still a thing.

Sonarr/Radarr are the most popular ones but there are others too. Most work with torrents and usenet but you’d need to check the individual projects to be sure.

brickfrog,

Got banned from torrent leech after uninstalling theyr broken cracked softwares that i couldnt manage to run properly, dropping my ratio above 0.4

i quite seed anything untill i need more space on the drives

Either you need to upgrade your hard drives to seed longer or you need to actually seed longer. You're not going to survive at any private trackers if you keep removing torrents before meeting the tracker's seed criteria.

Re: Torrentleech they'll re-open signups again, you could just wait until then & give it another go.

There are other general private trackers just not sure what to recommend that is currently open registration right now. Keep an eye on [email protected] and https://opentrackers.org/ you might catch something open for signup.

EDIT: Maybe DigitalCore? Not a member there but they are a general tracker and https://opentrackers.org/ lists them as open signup right now.

brickfrog,

Yup heard of it, on Reddit people often spam affiliate links to that site.. hopefully that spam doesn't happen here.

brickfrog,

LibreTorrent (https://gitlab.com/proninyaroslav/libretorrent) is popular.

FrostWire (https://github.com/frostwire/frostwire) is also open source, not as popular as LibreTorrent though it does have other features built in (torrent search for example).

Both are also in the Android Play Store though you may want to install the .apk directly if you need the app to have full access to your Android storage.

Question about qBittorrent

So I was downloading a torrent late last night. I of course was using protection since I live in one of those countries where you need one. I ended up falling asleep, leaving it run and seed all night. Does qBittorrent happen to keep a log of peers? I just want to know if my IP somehow leaked last night even though my VPN was...

brickfrog,

Does qBittorrent happen to keep a log of peers?

No.

I just want to know if my IP somehow leaked last night even though my VPN was on.

You wouldn't need to think about this if you configured your torrent client correctly. Bind it to your VPN's network interface.. in qBittorrent that's in Options / Advanced / Network Interface. You could also search around for info on that.

brickfrog,

Are you asking for new router suggestions? Or you meant bandwidth monitoring for just one device on your network?

That sort of info is best recorded at the router level. pfSense has packages you can install that record bandwidth usage & are useful for that. Not sure about OPNsense but I think (?) that would have something similar.

brickfrog,

Generally speaking usenet indexers are not specialized so most of the time you'll just have to try different general usenet indexers & see if any work out for you.

for general

Most usenet indexers are in that category. If you are just starting out then look into NZBGeek & expand from there. Their internal forums can also help with learning about the rest of usenet.

music

Same as above, most people use general usenet indexers. The only specialized indexer is the Headphones VIP indexer, not sure if it's worthwhile but you can try it yourself https://headphones.codeshy.com/vip/

anime

Anime Tosho specializes in that category (they aren't just strictly usenet). Otherwise it's general usenet indexers.

and/or pro wrestling content?

Doesn't exist, you'd need to use general usenet indexers.

brickfrog,

There are a few across the Fediverse

dbzer0.com is Reddit /r/Piracy's instance. lemmy.ml is a pre-existing one. kbin.social is a new one I think. Most of the Reddit crowd is hanging out at the dbzer0 instance.
