PSA, do not copy any JS code on the web to your browser unless you understand it or it has been validated by many others.

in general, well-established browser extension are unlikely to be malicious, but random JS code on the internet can.

(in this specific case, the code seems fine to me.

baseless_discourse,

but there is some benefit to upload on imgur, as it saves server storage space of your instance.

Another way to be more private is to only federate upvote/downvote count, instead of the detail of the upvote/downvote. This is not only lighter but more private. When the count needs to be updated just broadcast the new upvote count.

But I see why they want to do it the current way, as it is more aligned with activitypub protocol, and allow other platform like mastodon to participate without problems.

I cannot think of much problem in implementing a “hidden upvote system” in activitypub. Basically, it will work like this:

  • user on instance A upvotes a post in instance B: instance A tells instance B the user upvoted the post, but not anyone else.
  • instance C trying to fetch a post from instance B: B will only communicate the upvote/downvote count, but not the detail
    • if instance C is not a threadiverse instance (like mastodon) it will show “xx number of upvote from B is hidden.”
baseless_discourse,

A instance can always generate bunch of fake user and use them to upvote their own stuff. With LLM I would imagine it would be trivial to make them sounds semi-human.

Unless fediverse implements some sort of smart contract system using proof of work/stake system, i don’t really see much way to fix faking upvote. Even so, it is hard to make the implementation correct, and probably abusable (for example, most user only use a phone with 128G of storage, people can just buy couple 4TB drive and pretend each of them are 40 real users).

baseless_discourse,

It will probably never be. Because it is never intended to be a platform for profit, but a (finally, real) place for everyone to hang out. In turn, everyone contribute content, money, code, and/or time to keep this place alive.

It is really pretty grim that we are conditioned to think that our internet NEEDS to benefit a corporate and its millionaire shareholders.

I think people are familiar with Netherland educations here, so I hope it is not out of line to ask these.

Is there teaching-oriented academic position in Netherlands, similar to liberal art colleges in the U.S.? Primarily I am looking for small class size and in-person interactions between undergrad and professors.

Do they accept English speakers for teaching positions? I am willing to learn Dutch, but it would take me years to be fluent.

baseless_discourse, (edited )

Uh that sucks. I really want to teach, and don’t want to do it in the U.S.

I think in the U.S. libre art model, each class will have intake limit, but I am not sure if there is intake limit for class years.

baseless_discourse,

Thanks for that information! I will look into it!

baseless_discourse,

Brought you by the guy who is building “self-driving” cars

baseless_discourse,

It also fill you up without producing a lot of poop (based on my experience).

baseless_discourse,

I use ublock, but I try not to block ads. All I block is tracker, annoyance, and other malicious components. I feel like content creators need to make money somehow, as long as the ads don’t contain tracking (admittedly, most of them does contain trackers), I am okay with it.

baseless_discourse,

I don’t really see how you can force/verify another instance has purged their DB. Like the worst case scenario, they can simply make another DB for all the deleted info.

Such purge is harder to ensure than for large companies. Since large companies are (mostly?) Bounded by laws like GDPR. Where such law is harder to enforce on a random fedi instance on the internet.

baseless_discourse,

If a server don’t obey GDPR, it is unlikely for them to obey AGPL. If the data is useful for the company, they will just pay the fine as cost of doing business.

baseless_discourse,

I understand the sentiment, but malls are cool, they are great place to hang out with plenty of things to do. And people don’t need to worry about weather conditions, don’t need to drive (assuming you can go to the mall via transportation).

I don’t know why North America decided strip mall with oversized parking (most strip malls literally have more space for cars than for people, which is kind of ridiculous IMO) is better than traditional mall.

baseless_discourse,

This is not technically prompt injection. Prompt injection happens when developer feeds a AI some predefined text (for functionality or security reasons) plus user input.

User input can use input text that interact with hard coded prompt (like “ignore above”, “ignore below”, etc) to break the intended functionality of predefined text.

This is just tricking safety mechanism by using imaginary scenario. Although both technique serve the purpose of breaking security, I don’t think they are necessarily the same.

baseless_discourse,

Eat laxative after, simple.

baseless_discourse,

It depends on the diet, I grow up with a diet that is high on oil, chilli, and veggie, I had no problem pooping everyday.

Then I went to college, the only veggies I can find are overcooked broccoli or cold iceberg lettuce. I can easily go a week without pooping, since my digestive system is just not used to these kind of diet.

Obviously it is extremely uncomfortable to go weeks without pooping. I would prefer to poop like normal, but I cannot find the diet I am used to in college.

baseless_discourse,

Something to note for the future, never install windows after Linux, even they are on different drives. Windows boot manager is very invasive, it likely will overwrite your Linux boot manager.

I love evolution gives us fish with saw in their head, fish with hammer being their head, fish that walks on land, multiple species of fish that literally breath but cannot go near land, a deer with extremely long neck, an animal that have two teeth sticking out of its mouth and eats with its long nose.

But a horse with a single horn, sorry man, that is too farfetched.

baseless_discourse,

I don’t quite understand, if cis is a slur, what should we call people who have the same gender as their birth certificates? Is there an alternative name for it?
