In my latest article for Unsustainable Magazine, I unapologetically brought my research on to bear on our current . I hope it contributes to the discussion of how we react to the in a good way.

Proud to present the ALECC call-for-papers for our conference June 19-22, 2024, with the theme of "Migrations"!

Please boost and share widely among your colleagues if possible.

@academicchatter @waterlooregion

The 2024 ALECC conference invites thoughtful responses to interactions between literal and figurative more-than-human and human migrations. Submissions are welcome on the proposed theme and other related areas of interest from artists, creative writers, and scholars in the environmental arts and humanities, and migration studies, broadly defined. We welcome those working in the following areas: Indigenous thought and practices, interdisciplinary praxis, pedagogy and climate change migrations, environmental feminisms, critical refugee studies, border studies, ecopoetics and literary studies, animal studies, plant humanities, materialisms, blue humanities, petrocultures and energy humanities, visual art, film, ecomedia studies, environmental histories, mobility studies, health studies, cultural geography, environmental philosophy, cultural studies, and related areas of environmental studies. Migrations will be an in-person conference. Submission Information Proposals must be submitted by December 15th, 2023 to [email protected].
Submissions in English, French, or Indigenous languages will be accepted. Proposals should indicate clearly the nature of the session and all requests for audio-visual equipment and any other specific needs (e.g., space, moveable chairs, outdoor location, etc.). We ask that panel organizers attempt to include a diversity of participants. Email submissions should include in the subject line the word SUBMISSION, the abstract type (panel, paper, other), and your (or the panel proposer’s) name: SUBMISSION paper Julia Devi, for example, or SUBMISSION panel Bo Kwon. We will acknowledge all submissions. Please visit our website at https://alecc.ca/ for more info because Ariel couldn't fit it all on here. All presenters must be paid members of the organization or an affiliate by the date of the conference. Acknowledging the ongoing, evolving conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, ALECC will follow municipal, provincial, and federal regulations (if any) and supports voluntary mitigation practices like masking.

Not saying that you have to link to a definitive solution to the problem you interrogate/describe. That is impossible.

But I would like to see writers/editors start giving people the tools to put knowledge into action.

NO, you can't continue to blithely occupy stolen land. But YES, you can write letters to your elected officials demanding . You can join a protest to call attention to the issue. You can choose to support Indigenous organizations.

@academicchatter

Even small things are helpful to get people to act on the very real emotions they feel when reading these articles. Not everyone has the capacity to do everything, but I would argue that everyone had the capacity to do SOMETHING positive.

Let's mobilize that energy in the moment.

Talking to you, #editors.

"ECO EXHIBITIONS WON'T SAVE US" BY Marv Recinto.

"Exhibitions of art about ecology have been sprouting up everywhere, usually operating under some premise of ‘raising awareness’ for the climate crisis".

"Given the current state of ecological degradation, perhaps it’s time for a more concerted effort towards action. There are certainly limitations to this approach, particularly within the gallery space, which can’t house sheep to be shepherded, but perhaps it’s more a question of a shift in emphasis, towards practices that combine art and activism and actively engage the viewer. Does this necessitate a fundamental shift in how we define art? Yes. But in times like this such rules are made to be broken".

@Barros_heritage @sociology @ecology @academicchatter I would say that eco art exhibitions are actually pretty great but you can't just raise awareness and leave it at that. Every single art exhibit in this vein should have concrete actionable items (MULTIPLE) that viewers can immediately act on while inspired. These actions should be curated to fit the theme also.
